Nutrition and Wellness is an essential course in understanding nutritional needs and food choices for optimal health of a lifetime. Interrelationships with wellness are explored. This course leads to the advanced nutrition pathway and develops a knowledge base and the skills necessary to select among alternatives in the marketplace, with an emphasis on nutrient content, the development of chronic diseases, and food safety.
The focus of the course centers on healthy food and lifestyle choices. Students will investigate the relationship of food, nutrition, and wellness to promote good health. This course prepares students to become informed consumers of food and nutrition concepts. Topics studied include food preparation, current nutritional and dietary guidelines, health trends, and food safety. Exploration of a variety of careers in food and nutrition and wellness is an essential component of the course.
Mastery of standards through project-based learning, technical skills practice, and leadership development activities of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) will provide students with a competitive edge for either entry into the education global marketplace and/or the post-secondary institution of their choice to continue their education and training.
This course will provide a background for students to develop a knowledge base of nutrition parameters. The focuses of this curriculum include the role of food in our lives and its link to nutrition & wellness. Students will explore issues and concerns relating to human nutrition and its relationship to good health, selection and preparation of nutritious foods, food guidelines for safety, sanitation, storage, food preservation, and recycling . Students will also explore relationships within a family, peers, and others in context to growth and wellness.
