Component I : Philosophy and Student Identification
· Philosophy
The Gifted and Talented Program of Florence-Carlton School believes in offering enriching activites to students needing challenges and experiences to broaden their education past grade-level standards. Ambition, creativity, and uniqueness will be supported and fostered to the best of the teaching community.
- Student Identification
1. In the beginning of the school year, classroom teachers will fill out the Traits, Attributes, and Behaviors (TABs) form while observing student behavior over a two-week period of time.
2. Students whose name appears in a minimum of six categories on TABs that have not been tested before will be given the SAGES II appropriate for their grade level.
3. Students scoring greater than 120 norm quotient in a minimum of one category will qualify to enroll in the gifted program.
4. Students falling in the possible range, 120-111 norm quotient, will have other test scores such as CRT or MAPs considered. A perfect score of 300 on the CRT and a normative quotient ten points higher than the median grade-level score on MAPS coupled with consideration of classroom performance may qualify a student to enroll in the program.
5. All decisions on student placement are reviewed by a gifted and talented committee.
Component II: Curriculum and Instruction
· Students identified as Gifted Students will receive at least one hour per week of pull-out enrichment accompanied by other students similarly identified.
· Students will have opportunities for field trips that are motivated by their interests and talents and accompanied by other gifted students.
· Students will be exposed to real-world opportunities for their skills by attending lunches with guest speakers.
· Classroom teachers will be offered access to resources and ideas from Gifted Teachers.
Component III: Support Services and Parental Involvement
Parents will be offered information about conferences and resources they can use to help guide their gifted child.
Classroom teachers will be offered resources and information about ways to enrich their classroom teaching and any additional support needed to meet needs of their gifted students.
Component IV: Professional Development
Teachers designated as Gifted and Talented teachers will be sent annually to the state’s AGATE conference to attend workshops and receive additional training.
Several spots will be open to classroom teachers who wish to attend the conference.
Component V: Program Evaluation
Teachers who classes included identified Gifted Students and parents recieve an end-of-year survey to offer constructive criticism and praise for the program. New ideas and approaches will be taken into consideration.
