DNA
Currently there are only three DNA tests that are applicable for doing genealogy research: Y-DNA, autosomal DNA and mtDNA. None of the DNA tests alone can tell you anything, it's just a bunch of numbers. Initially it's your relationship with "other" testers that count and the bigger the pool the company has the better. There are DNA comparison services which can take a test farther for relationships, typically the autosomal DNA test.
The Y-DNA test is for males only and follows paternal male only line, from son to father to grandfather and so on.

The autosomal DNA test can be taken by a male or female. It identifies the relationships of the tester with other testers (with the same company) in a somewhat general way. It is not particularly exact once you are farther than a parent or sibling and is reasonably good for about 5 generations back.
Available from: Ancestry (called AncestryDNA), FamilyTreeDNA (called Family Finder), MyHeritage (called MyHeritageDNA) and 23andMe (called ). There are other testing companies which do not yet have large databases of testers with which to compare.

The mtDNA test can be taken by a male or female and follows the material line, from son or daughter to mother to mother and so on.
