Safety issues around dark web content
What exactly is the dark web?
Clearly this website likes to explain everything with pictures so here we go again –
What’s on the dark web?
Examples of illegal things your parents would not want you to find (including yourself):
Stolen information.
Illicit substances. Illegal drugs, toxic chemicals etc.
Disturbing and dangerous items and services. Things like gore, murderers-for-hire, human trafficking, child pornography, body parts, counterfeit goods, and guns for sale can be found on the dark web.
Basically, anything illegal and dehumanising you can think of. Maybe the gory movies you saw on TV weren’t fiction at all…
In short, you can buy just about anything you can imagine — including things you’d probably be better off not imagining.
How does business happen in the dark web? *drum roll* One and only – Cryptocurrency that helps assure buyers and sellers anonymity.
Is the dark web safe?
1 word. 2 characters.
NO
Here are a few safety issues to consider.
Criminal element. There’s a chance you will find websites run by criminals who in addition to selling people and drugs would gladly do the same to you.
Breaking the law. You can go to jail for the things you do on the dark web.
Suspicious links. If you click on any links, you may be taken to see a material you might not want to see. And no this isn’t just any ordinary kind of clickbait.
Law enforcement. Law enforcement officials, or spies if you think that’s a cooler name, operate on the dark web to catch the bad guys.
Viruses: Downloading and delving into this part of the internet means coming across certain websites that could infect your devices with viruses. Remember do not trust anything or anyone on the dark web.
Hackers: In addition to software viruses, you can come across literal human viruses called hackers. They are smart enough to hack into your laptop and steal everything you have – photos, any information on the internet, data in folders etc. Yes, even that research essay you wrote for the Academic Writing class that’s due next week.
Webcam hijacking: Hackers may even be able to hack your webcam and watch every step of yours and hear every word you utter. All this while you have no clue. It’s always good to cover your camera with a tape or a piece of paper when you’re not using it.
Tip of advice: Don’t do it. Don’t fall for it. Don’t dig too deep.
Delving into risky matters and experimentations can only lead to your downfall.
Remember: Curiosity killed the cat.
Just in case, we didn't scare you enough, just make sure you have life insurance before you go on the dark web.
