My name is Douglas Lyerly. I’ve been teaching professionally since 2006 and unprofessionally since 1996 (I volunteered a lot as a teen). I studied History Education and Theatre as an undergrad at the University of Madison-Wisconsin, and I earned my masters degree in Bilingual/Bicultural Education at Depaul University. I have previously taught English as a Second Language in Japan, Library-Media Studies in Chicago, and a multitude of subjects and grade levels in my time at FALA. This year I will be teaching High School Writing For Performance, 6th Grade Social Studies, and 6-8th Grade Theatre! What a cool lineup of classes!
I live with multiple chickens, two children, and a very cool wife. I love books, drawing, comics, democratic-republics, music, FALA, talking, not talking, and teaching! I play a lot of guitar, ukulele, and piano in my free time, (but not very well as half of the people at this school). I moved to Flagstaff from Chicago in 2014 and have been teaching at FALA ever since. This is my 10th year at FALA, and there's nowhere else I'd rather be! FALA is the best place to work as a teacher and a great place for students to learn! USA! USA! USA!
Here's a video of a news segment about me and a piece on a visit from the mayor to our 6th grade Social Studies classroom (which was actually filmed on the same day and split into two pieces):
