Roadblock 5
Prohibition - The Untouchables
___ 1. READ the following togethertaking notes on important facts.
In the early 1900s, alcoholism was a growing problem. Groups of people wanted to outlaw alcohol believing that a world without liquor would be a better place. On January 20,1920, the 18th Amendment of the Constitution, also called Prohibition, made the manufacture, sale and transportation of liquor illegal.
Unfortunately for the people who supported the law, prohibition made drinking more attractive to some. Gangsters like Al Capone of Chicago took over the illegal activity of selling liquor and organized crime became powerful and glamours. “Speakeasies", secret illegal nightclubs, popped up all over the country - by 1933 there were more than 200,000 illegal speakeasies (also called blind pigs) throughout the US. Prohibition laws became the most disliked and disobeyed laws in US history.
When Congress passed the law they didn’t think about how it would be enforced and did not provide enough money for FBI agents. Even President Warren G. Harding stocked the White House with illegal alcohol! As people started breaking the prohibition law it led to people having less respect for laws over all. Organized crime became a big business.
Eliot Ness was an American Prohibition agent, famous for his efforts to bring down Al Capone and enforce Prohibition in Chicago. He was the leader of a famous team of law enforcement agents from Chicago, nicknamed "The Untouchables".
