The FIT Writing and Speaking Studio is a diverse and inclusive space where FIT students can plan, prepare, or put their final touches on assignments for class, personal, or professional use. In our collaborative sessions, we strive to make your voice heard; therefore, every session is as unique as the student. So, what will your next writing or speaking appointment look like? It could look like a lot of different things.
We can help you understand assignment guidelines, concept development, critical thinking, outlining, researching, editing, and so much more. For example, let’s say you come into the Studio and you haven’t even started your assignment. We can help you brainstorm creative ideas and determine what you want to communicate as a writer. We can even set up multiple appointments to help you revise your paper as you work through the writing process. The Studio can help you with artist statements, scholarship essays, thesis papers–you name it, whether your paper is 99.99% finished or you haven’t even started.
The same thing applies for public speaking. These sessions give you a chance to improve your oral presentation, speech, or interview skills. We help you with planning, practicing, or overcoming your public speaking anxiety. For example, let’s say you have a big speech coming up and you don’t know where to start. We may start with analyzing who is your audience and what is the purpose of your speech. Then we can brainstorm and organize your thoughts to support your main idea. We can also help you practice your speech and prepare for possible Q&A questions.
In most semesters, we offer both in-person and online consultations, but when the college is working remotely, we offer online appointments that are synchronous - meaning happening in real time - through video chat, audio chat, and instant message. Consultations can be scheduled by clicking the link in this video or visiting our website and clicking the Schedule Appointment button in the middle of the screen. For more information on scheduling your first appointment, you can check out our how-to videos located in the consultation section of our website. You’ll also find information about our hours and location, and further updates on future events under the What’s New, What’s Happening section of the site.
So whether you’re working on an essay or your next big presentation, come on down to the Writing and Speaking Studio. We would love to have you. Welcome! The FIT Writing and Speaking Studio has created this video to inform you on how to create an appointment and access your appointments online. To get started, begin on the login page. You can reach the login page through the Writing and Speaking Studio website or just type the following URL onto your web browser: fit.mywconline.com. Once you have logged into the WCOnline platform using your FIT username and password, you will find a page with dates and times to schedule an appointment. If you experience difficulty logging in, watch our video titled “How to Make an Account” for further instruction.
On the top of the screen, you will find a blue strip that states your name, where you can update your profile and email options or log out. In the center, you will find the current week of appointments and have the ability to change the schedule to your week of choice. You also have the option to view schedules of other FIT facilities, such as the Academic Skills Center, Library One-on-One Research Help, and the Office of Educational Opportunity Program.
Underneath the blue strip, you can limit the specialization of your preferred peer consultant as well. On the lefthand corner, you will find dates along with the specializations of writing and speaking consultants. You will also find information on whether that consultant is available for online or in-person sessions. On the top of the chart are available times to schedule appointments. We encourage students to schedule appointments in advance. After you decide your desired day, time, and consultant of choice, click on a white box to make an appointment. A white box means that the time slot is open. If you are curious or need more information on the different box colors on your screen, click “Help” on the left hand corner.
Once you’ve clicked on a white box, a page titled “Create New Appointment” will pop up on your screen. Start off by filling your name and appointment time at the top of this page. Then, fill out all other information and keep in mind that all questions with a red asterisk are required to proceed. We ask for your class name, professor, and project description so tutors can be best prepared and make an effective use of session time by knowing this information beforehand.
Once all information is filled out, click “Create Appointment” on the bottom of the page. Once you’ve clicked “Create Appointment,” a page titled “View Existing Appointment” will pop up, giving you an appointment confirmation. The “View Existing Appointment” page will also allow you to edit or cancel your appointment if needed. If your appointment will be held in person, just go to the Writing and Speaking Studio in room C612 on your scheduled appointment time. If your appointment will be held online, click “Start or Join Online Consultation” in the bold, red type in the middle of the screen.

Welcome! The FIT Writing and Speaking Studio has created this video to guide you through taking part in online sessions. In order to access your online Writing and Speaking Studio appointment, the first thing you’ll need to do is sign into your WCOnline account. If you don’t already have an account, or don’t know how to make an appointment, refer to our previous video.
Once you’ve got the schedule in front of you. You want to go ahead and click on the appointment box. At that point, you’ll be given the option to start or join online consultation in bold red letters in the middle of the screen.
Now that you’ve clicked Start or Join Online Consultation, you’ll see that you’re being given the option to turn on your camera and microphone. To turn them on, click Allow. We encourage the use of these tools because they do tend to make sessions more productive, but it’s also certainly okay if you don’t feel comfortable using them. The session also has a chat area to the right of the collaboration space or the whiteboard area in the middle.
You’ll see that me, your tutor, has already arrived! If you chose to enable your microphone and camera, you’ll see that your tutor will guide you in that way. Other times, tutors use the chat function to say hello and get started on your work. Depending on the needs of the appointment, we may ask you to switch over with us to a different platform such as Google Hangout.
To begin your online appointment, paste your writing into the large space in the middle which should read “Welcome to your online consultation.” Below this, it has information explaining the tools written. Once you paste or import your paper, you’ll be able to edit the text as the appointment goes on so that you and your tutor can see any changes you decide to make.
There are many tools that WCOnline includes to make sessions the best they can be. To the top left of the collaboration space or whiteboard area, there are familiar basic editing tools for your writing, such as bold, italic. You can hover over these items to see their titles. On the top right of the collaboration space or whiteboard area, there is a toolbar with the following options: There’s a drawing tool you can circle things or add a drawing of what you’re discussing. There is another to print out the consultation. You can even upload files by clicking on the import/export button, choose a file, and add it to the text window in the center. There is a time slider tool; this allows you to view the session in real time.
I hope that this video has helped you understand how to navigate your online tutoring session.
