Dr. Sanaa is head of the World Health Organization's Department of Nutrition and Food Safety's Scientific Standards and Advice on Food and Nutrition (SSA) unit. He was previously the Head of the Food Risk Assessment Unit at the French Agency for Food, Environmental, and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES), where he oversaw work on the risk assessment of chemical and microbiological contaminants, as well as the safety assessment of enzymes, processing aids, food contact materials, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). He was previously professor at the National Veterinary College, Alfort, France, where he taught biostatistics, epidemiology, and risk analysis, as well as supervising national and European research programs in the field of veterinary public health (now known as One Health).
Between 2005 and 2018, he contributed significantly to the work of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) expert groups on animal health and welfare and biological risks in food, as well as participating in several capacity-building projects for food safety systems in Africa, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. He served as a senior epidemiologist at the US-Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (FDA-CFSAN, Maryland, USA) from 2017 to 2018.
Amadeus Driando Ahnan-Winarno, PhD (a.k.a "Dr. Driando, The Tempeh Doctor") is a food sciencepreneur and activist with a life mission of giving more people access to nutritious, sustainable, and affordable foods. He does it by innovating on and promoting tempeh and tempeh fermentation, which originated in Indonesia 400+ years ago. In 2014, Dr. Driando co-founded the world's largest tempeh network, the Indonesian Tempe Movement, which now has involved representatives from 24 countries. In 2018, Dr. Driando co-founded the UK's fastest-growing tempeh brand, Better Nature Tempeh. Since pursuing his PhD in Food Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (then #1 in the US according US News and World Report), Dr. Driando has received 33 national and international awards for his works in tempeh fermentation, food science, entrepreneurship, and science communication. Dr. Driando first-authored "The Tempeh Bible" i.e. the world's most updated manuscript on tempeh and tempeh fermentation, published in CRFSFS, then the world's #1 non-annual food science journal according to Scopus. Dr. Driando has invented 4 patents and launched 10 products onto the European and Middle-Eastern markets. Steve Wearne was appointed Director of Food Safety in July 2013, the role becoming Director of Policy two months later. Previous to this he was Director of FSA Wales. He was elected to serve as the 20th Chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission in November 2021.
Steve is a scientist by training, with a degree in biochemistry and a spell of postgraduate research in molecular biology at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular biology in Cambridge. Steve joined the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in 1990 and held a range of posts in food science and food policy development, before transferring to the Agency when it was launched in 2000. His first post in the Agency was head of the Private Office and Private Secretary to the first Chair of the FSA, Sir John Krebs (now Lord Krebs).
