Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) – KMS High School
Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) is a program that allows high school students with strong academic performance, advanced skills, and the maturity to succeed in a college environment to earn both high school and college credit at the same time. Through PSEO, students take college courses that also count toward their high school diploma. To participate, students must meet Minnesota’s residency and eligibility requirements, follow the participation limits set in Minnesota Statutes, and complete a three-part application process. Students must apply directly with the college or university they wish to attend, and admission requirements vary by institution.
To assist the district in planning, a student must inform KMS High School in writing by May 30th (for fall term enrollment) or October 30th (for spring term enrollment) of their intent to enroll in postsecondary courses.
Student Eligibility
11th and 12th grade students may take PSEO courses on a full- or part-time basis. Each participating college or university sets its own admissions requirements for enrollment in PSEO courses.
Tenth-grade students are eligible to enroll in one Career and Technical Education (CTE) course if they receive a reading proficiency score of "meets" or "exceeds" on the 8th-grade MCA.
Tuition and Fees
PSEO students are not charged tuition, books, or fees for items required to participate in a course; however, students may incur fees for equipment that becomes their property when the course or program is completed, textbooks that are not returned to the postsecondary institution according to their policies, or tuition costs if they do not notify the district by May 30 or October 30.
Other Helpful Information
PSEO students must provide the school with a copy of their grades in each PSEO course.
KMS accepts college credit with the ratio of 4 college credits equal to 1 KMS credit.
Student must meet with the school counselor to ensure high school graduation requirements are met.
Should I Participate in PSEO Classes?
Before deciding to participate in the PSEO program, students and parents should consider the following:
High School Graduation – Students must still meet KMS High School graduation requirements to earn a diploma. The grades earned in postsecondary courses will affect the student's GPA and may impact eligibility to graduate.
Scheduling – Participating in PSEO on a part-time basis requires balancing schedules between KMS High School and the college, which may have different breaks and semester start dates. It is the student's responsibility to coordinate attendance and coursework completion.
College-Level Work – College courses are often more accelerated and academically challenging than high school courses. Students must be independent, self-motivated, and have strong time management skills.
Withdrawal – If a student withdraws from a PSEO class after the add/drop period of the college, they will receive a “W” on their college transcript and an “F” on their KMS HS transcript. You MUST meet with your high school counselor to complete the withdrawal process with the post-secondary institution and discuss scheduling options.
PSEO Enrollment Process at KMS High School
There are 3 forms along with a meeting that will need to be filled out and done by May 30th (for fall) or October 30th (for spring) to participate in PSEO for the following school year:
Schedule in Person Meeting with Counselor or Principal, Parent, and Student (Schedule with Amy Ruka)
Fill out 2026-27 Notice of Student Registration Form (NOSR) – or available at: MDE PSEO Website
Complete PSEO Application – This must be submitted directly to the college the student wishes to attend.
