In the Gender section introduction to our book, the editors write, "What is the distinction between sex and gender? The former refers to biological identity; the latter has come to mean behavior that is learned." Currently in our society, some believe that transgendered individuals are "going through a phase," and can perhaps control their gender identity. Such people who hold those views are actually proposing and passing laws to restrict transgendered rights. Many others believe that gender identity is something we are born with and seek to defend the rights of transgendered people. Develop a position on this issue and discuss how transgendered individuals fit into society.
