Students in third grade have the experience of learning from both Mr. Kearney and Mrs. Tully. Music class is split up using a trimester model (the school year is split into three parts). During the first trimester, students who have Mr. Kearney will learn music through an intensive recorder program called Recorder Karate, while Mrs. Tully teaches vocal technique and various music concepts through educational games and activities. Students report to the opposite teacher during the second trimester. These classes culminate with a student performance in the third trimester where third grade students perform songs learned from Mrs. Tully and recorder pieces learned with Mr. Kearney. This is also the time when students get to try out different instruments they are considering learning to play as fourth graders the following school year. A letter is sent home at the beginning of the school year with specific details concerning music in third grade.
