My present appointment involves a combination of classroom teaching, organizing a professional development program for faculty colleagues, and release time for my own scholarly projects and interests.

I oversaw an undergraduate honors program involving a dozen multidisciplinary seminars taught by about 18 faculty, an undergraduate research and enrichment component, a language requirement, and a study abroad experience. Program membership averages around 60 students.

I teach American and women’s literature, Harry Potter and the Hero Myth, Media Law and Ethics, The Novel, Junior and Senior Seminar, Composition I and II, and two honors courses, Media & Violence and Values & Vocation (the capstone). Until April 2011, I taught journalism and advised the newspaper staff.
In 2014, I received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Board of Higher Education of the United Methodist Church. I was Ferrum's 2016 nominee for the Outstanding Faculty Award given by the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia.

I teach two one-week sessions of “Hogwarts Academy,” a Harry Potter-themed experience for 5th-7th graders, three or four classes each week.
