Lana A. Whited is a teacher, writer, and editor who lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Her latest book is The Ivory Tower, Harry Potter, and Beyond: More Essays on the Works of J.K. Rowling (2024). This anthology includes essays on the Fantastic Beasts film franchise, The Casual Vacancy, The Cursed Child, the Cormoran Strike detective novels, and The Ickabog, as well as the Harry Potter novels.
Dr. Whited's most recent monograph is Murder, In Fact: Disillusionment and Death in the American True Crime Novel (McFarland, 2020). Murder, In Fact is the result of a research project spanning more than three decades and covering American novels about homicide published between 1890 and 2010 (from Frank Norris's McTeague to John Grisham's The Innocent Man). Murder, In Fact is available everywhere books are sold.
She is editor of three other essay collections about fantasy literature: The Ivory Tower and Harry Potter: Perspectives on a Literary Phenomenon (U of Missouri P, 2002), Critical Insights: The Hunger Games Trilogy (Grey House, 2016), and Critical Insights: The Harry Potter Series (Grey House, 2015, edited with M. Katherine Grimes). An internationally recognized expert on the Harry Potter series, Dr. Whited is a regular guest on the MuggleNet podcast Potterversity and taught a Hogwarts Academy course in a middle school summer enrichment program for about ten years. She has been a featured speaker at the Annual Chestnut Hill Harry Potter Academic Conference (Pa.), Edinboro Potterfest (Pa.), Queen City Mischief & Magic (Va.), and Roanoke, Va.'s Generic Magic Festival.
Dr. Whited is Williams Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Humanities at Ferrum College, where she is the longest-serving full-time faculty member. In 2014, she was recognized with an Exemplary Teaching Award from the Board of Higher Education and Ministries of the United Methodist Church. She was Ferrum College’s 2016 nominee for the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia’s Outstanding Faculty Awards. Since 2020, she has served as faculty marshall. Dr. Whited directed the Boone Honors Program (at Ferrum) for seventeen years, from 2007 to 2024.
Dr. Whited earned degrees from Emory & Henry College (B.A., English), The College of William & Mary (B.A., English), Hollins University (M.A., Creative Writing), and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (Ph.D., 20th Century British & American Literature).
Dr. Whited lives with her family and too many pets to count on a 10-acre farm in Western Franklin County. She is also a devoted grandmother.
