Expectations

Effort

This is one of the most important things to bring to class, effort and perseverance are keys to success. Never leave a question blank or give up. I'm here to help and to make sure you know the importance of this skill.

Respect

...to yourself, to your peers, to adults and to the learning environment.

Kindness

In order to create a safe and inclusive environment we need to be kind. We are all the same and we are all different. We want to feel safe, loved, and understood. Yet, we are all different; we have different experiences, backgrounds, cultures and interests. Our differences are what make us who we are, and can help other people learn.

Responsibility

This is a life skill I want second graders to understand. Students need to complete assignments when they are due and take ownership over their actions.

Homework

All students will be given a homework folder to keep the weekly packet in. This packet will be given to students every Monday and will be due on Friday. Students will need to bring the folder daily to class to have their reading log checked. If you have a very busy evening please make a note on their reading log. I know that students have extracurricular activities, but I do encourage you to make daily reading a priority. No homework on the weekends!

This contains:

Daily Reading Log

Students are expected to read twenty minutes a day and answer the reading prompt (this log will be at the front of the packet and will be checked off each day - students need to remember to bring it to class Tuesday - Friday in order to receive full credit).

Math Page

There will be a double-sided math packet to complete each day that aligns with the current math content. I suggest completing a page daily, the packet is due on Friday.

Spelling and Vocabulary Practice Pages

A few worksheets are included in order for students to prepare for the spelling test on Fridays. These tests are focused on addressing a phonics skill or growing their Greek/Latin root word knowledge and/or academic vocabulary. Students will need coloring utensils, scissors and a glue stick at home in order to complete this assignment. Due Friday.

If students would like additional work

I am always happy to discuss how your student's needs could be better met. For example, using online learning tools like Freckle, Prodigy and other programs are excellent avenues to increase student exposure to standards.

Students receive grades each trimester for effort, citizenship, and work habits. Students are assessed in their ability to make good choices and take responsibility for their behavior. This includes work completion and their effort in contributing to a conducive learning environment.
