SNOW?

Kaylen Quimby

Well, snow may be upon us! It appears that on this morning of February 7th, sleet, or snow, or hail, or whatever, has come on this cloudy morning.

It has come as a surprise, especially with this week’s warmer, almost seventy-degree weather. But suddenly the temperature dropped this morning, and the high is now longer late sixties, but rather early forties.

And then it came in visible white dots, falling on people’s hair and clothes. Turns out Fridays are truly magical.

Let’s hope whatever is coming down actually sticks! Who knows, maybe we’ll get a snow day.

Warm Weather Steals Chance of Snow:

Kaylen Quimby

Well, we’re not surprised.

If you don’t live closer up north in Georgia, you won’t likely get snow this year. The low this past week was almost 22 degrees, except it was all sunshine and rainbows. Minus actual rainbows. Of course, when it actually rains, the low is only forty-one degrees Fahrenheit.

Unless the temperature lowers at the right time and place in February, it seems unlikely that we’re going to get snow this winter.

So if you’re expecting snowball fights, snowman-making, or snow-days, you might have to wait until next year.

WEB Groups Switch Weeks!

Kaylen Quimby

It’s a new semester!

Okay, not much has changed, except for WEB groups. Remember the two groups Crabs and Apples? Well, they switched weeks.

For example, if your group is a Crab, they came the first week. However, this semester, you won’t get a WEB group visit until the second week.

So, whether you’re grateful for this schedule change or not, the change has been made. It will likely take a little bit of time for the sixth graders, and WEB leaders to get used to.

Either way--welcome back!

8th Grade Classes Battle for Best-Dressed

By Kaylen Quimby

And no, it isn’t one person from each class wears their best outfit in hopes of winning some Husky Bucks or some points. The models themselves are actually Crabapple staff! Yes, that’s true! Several unsung heroes, like the custodians, (Mr. Ned and Ms. Courtney), the librarians, (Mrs. Smith and Ms. Kowalski), and other staff members are assigned to each eighth grade homeroom. The class has to then design an outfit that deals with their model(s)’s career, personal interests, or something that makes them unique and recognizable. The classes’ designs will be judged by teachers on Thursday, and whomever wins will earn their house points in their favor.

N0t that I’m biased, but as a member of Ms. LeMieux’s homeroom, I’d have to cast my vote on her class! ;) For the most part, each class has kept their costume designs relatively--and I mean relatively--secret. Throughout the weeks it has been assigned, each class has slowly but surely put together their secret costume for their assigned staff member.

As the time to display their work draws nearer, it is clear that only one will win “Best-Dressed”. To all of the classes: Viel Glück! Bonne chance! ¡Buena suerte! And may the best designed-costume win! ;)

Heinous Cold Front Hacks into Halloween Fun:

By Kaylen Quimby

For the past few days, it has been pouring on-and-off. Since Georgia weather is often either sunny, cloudy or stormy, many residents weren’t surprised so much as the rain itself, but the amount of the rain. Starting this week, the sunny days were soon gone as the heinous rain took over. As the rain continued on, and Halloween grew ever closer, people were starting to alter their Halloween plans. Trick-or-treat parties were getting rescheduled for later, and some were considering cancelling their trick-or-treating altogether. Some, of course, weren’t even changing it at all.

But what really hit Georgia was the sudden temperature drop that occured right on Halloween. When students came out of Crabapple as a walker, carpooler, or bus-rider, they were shocked at how cold it was. Not only had it dropped a good twenty or so degrees, it was drizziling as well. Many were talking of staying inside, especially now that the cold temperature had been thrown into the mix.

But, at around 5:00, one of the factors was retracted. It was still cloudy, but all rain had stopped, leaving grass and sidewalks wet and with puddles. Trick-or-treating was now saved! Except for the fact that as the sun disappeared, the temperature began to drop, and rapidly. Soon, it was about 40 degrees, or a little bit above. Whether Halloween was saved or the heinous cold front won out, you decide…

A WEB Leader’s POV:

By Kaylen Quimby

*this is a follow-up article to Maya Duncan’s “My 6th Grade Perspective on WEB”

For all seventh and eighth graders--do you remember what’s it like to have WEB leaders? For me, I have a vivid memory of two 8th graders that would come every Wednesday to teach us about Crabapple. Some kids were happy--and others...not so much. But, as an 8th grader, I am now in my WEB leaders’ shoes. I am part of the Apples group, which does WEB the week after the Crabs do. (Because Crab + Apples is Crabapples! Ha ha.) What typically happens is that the week before, we get an assignment to do with the 6th graders; a week later, on Wednesday, we do the assignment with them, which often involves thinking outside-the-box and sometimes school.

I am very lucky, since my partner and I have a great group of kids, so we don’t get exasperated very often (most of the time). We really enjoy working with our partnering WEB group that works with the other half of the class, and often we laugh and have a great time. Sure, sometimes the assignments could be more fun, but at the end of the day, I look forward to coming to my class. Often times when we finish our lesson, we play fun games that involve candy as a prize, which everyone enjoys. ;D.

Overall, I don’t regret being a WEB leader, and I am looking forward to more fun experiences with my group!

CANTON STREET CHAOS

Kaylen Quimby

September 27, 2019

Canton Street has been a local tradition for many Crabapple Middle Schoolers. Even the sixth graders have joined the huge masses of kids going to Canton Street every Friday, trailing all the way past neighborhoods and streets and buses to one of the most, if not the most, popular places to hang out in Roswell. Canton Street is known for its shops, restaurants, barbeques, and sweet shops, like Fickle Pickle (including its famous Sugar Shack in the Back), Vintage, and the new coffee shop called Crazy Love.

What does happen during Canton Street? Well, Friday is the main day where most of the kids decide to become walkers, then walk up and down the hill from their school to the shops to eat, talk, and just plain hang out. This often results in a major business day for the shops.

But that isn’t the only side of Canton Street. Previously last year, the middle school sent out an email saying that due to rowdiness and misbehavior from the kids, the students could not go to the Fickle Pickle without adult supervision. Most recently, Crazy Love has just posted a sign on their doors saying that people under 16 cannot come into the store without an adult. This may set a trend for other shops. This takes up space the managers and workers use for other customers, which may drive them away, and cause them to lose a bit of profit. It’s highly likely that shops may also request the kids not coming in without adult supervision.

Walking to Canton has always been a highly valued tradition amongst Crabapple students, so what fun would it be if students cannot go there after school? What would replace the simplicity of walking there and talking with your friends? Sure, you could just ask for a drive there, but it just isn’t the same as walking. It also takes out the simplicity of going there without an adult. Perhaps students need to take their stuff with them, or think about the fact that their behavior may be taking the fun out of Canton for everyone. But who knows? Who will be to blame if no one can walk to Canton anymore? How many emails will have to be sent out in order to fix this Canton Street Chaos?
