Focus on your grades: Junior year is the last set of grades that colleges will see when you apply fall of your senior year! These grades will be the most recent and will be used to show colleges if you will do well in college classes. The minimum unweighted GPA for NC colleges in the UNC System is a 2.5. Remember this is the minimum and depending on how competitive the school is, they may prefer a higher GPA. Being a good student in your classes will also be helpful when thinking about which teacher(s) you would like to write you a letter of recommendation next year.
Prepare for Standardized Tests: All juniors will take the ACT in March. There are multiple free resources online to start prepping such as act.org.
Get Involved: Become involved in extracurriculars inside and/or outside of FHS. Colleges do not want a laundry list of activities! Pick a few activities that you are passionate about and stick with them. These can be clubs, sports, church involvement, community service, etc. Bonus points if you are able to demonstrate leadership either through a formal title or just by spearheading a project.
Prepare for Application Season: Junior year is a great opportunity to start looking at the 2-year and 4-year colleges that are out there! I will be inviting college representatives throughout the year to table in front of the cafeteria. I will also be posting dates for virtual information sessions and open houses that will allow you to visit colleges in person and see if it may be a right fit. Take advantage of opportunities to learn more about the major(s) and college(s) you are interested in!
You Got This! You have a lot of people in your corner that will help you get to where you want to be! Start thinking about your interests and find opportunities that will allow you to explore different options.
