FAQ

Q: How do I audition for a role/apply for the crew in the show?A: If you want to audition for an acting role in the show, check out the Casting section of this website for information on how to submit an audition online. If you want to join the crew and work backstage/behind the scenes, see the Tech Crew section for details on how to submit an application.
Q: What if I'm not sure if I want to do cast or crew? Can I apply for both and decide later based on what I get?A: Here at BHS we encourage students to dedicate energy to one or the other, cast OR crew. We don't agree with the mentality of "If I don't get the part I want, I will just do crew" because the techies here work VERY hard from start to end of the production. If you have questions about which fit is best for you, talk to the director or a BHStage veteran who has done a show before. They can let you know what each experience is like so you can make the best decision. Some students also do tech in the fall and act in the spring musical (or vice versa) to get a well rounded theater experience! There's no right or wrong, but we do ask you choose only one.
Q: I have a weekly commitment that requires me to leave rehearsal early. Will this affect my ability to be in the show?A: At BHStage we understand busy schedules more than most. We simply encourage students to let us know in advanced if they cannot attend a regular rehearsal. If you have a prior commitment (one time or weekly in this case), fill out the Conflict and Absence form as soon as possible so the directors can be made aware. Do keep in mind some roles/ crew positions require more rehearsal time than others. If you are extremely busy, think carefully when determining which roles/positions you have the time to commit to.
Q: Can I do a BHS sport and participate in the play?A: YES! We encourage student athletes to flex their schedules and come join us in the theater. Some athletes come to rehearsal for an hour, then head to practice after, or vice versa. Make sure to speak to your coach so they are okay with your commitments to the play and be sure to indicate your athletic schedule to the directors when applying/auditioning so we can find the best fit for you. If you have any concerns about this, talk to Ms. Peterson or Ms. Clugston and we can try to come to a solution with you and your coach.
Q: I can't commit to the cast or crew at this time, but I still want to help. How do I volunteer to be an usher or help out with stage makeup?A: Check out the new Show Volunteer section to learn about this option for students looking to earn volunteer/service hours but who cannot commit to the full production calendar. There are a few options like house management, hair & makeup, etc. for folks who just want to help for a few days or even just the week of the show!
Q: Do you have to take a theater class to be in the play?A: No. Like most things though, the more you practice, the better you become at your craft. We encourage all students interested in the performing arts to take classes to help foster their talents in and out of the classroom to their fullest potential. It is not a requirement, however, if you enjoy your time on/backstage, you may want to consider taking the class to meet graduation requirements and enjoy something you love with people you enjoy hanging out with for part of your school day!
Q: How do I know if I have rehearsal or not?A: Check the Rehearsal Calendar page of the production website for a full production calendar. If you click on the any particular date, you will see in the detail what Act/Scenes are being practiced and/or what crew tasks are being accomplished. Use your resources to determine if that requires you to be in attendance or not.
Q: If I don't make the cast can I still apply for the crew?A: We willl not make cuts to initial casting as long as you meet all requirements and deadlines.
Q: My friend is interested in theater but has never done it. Can they come watch a practice after school to see if it's for them and join the cast/crew late if they decide that they like it?A: All after school rehearsals at BHS are CLOSED to visitors and deadlines for applications are non-negotiable. This means students (either at BHS or elsewhere) that are not involved in the production may not attend our after school rehearsals if they did not complete application requirements in a timely manner. Those who sign up to do a show and sign a contract are Ms. Peterson's and Ms. Clugston's direct responsibility and are under their supervision after school hours. Other students in the rehearsal space who the adults have not agreed to supervise can lead to safety and security concerns, especially in emergencies. If you know someone interested in theater, encourage them to sign up for drama club on Schoology so they can come to club meetings and hear all about the theater opportunities available and meet some new friends!
Q: Please explain the Transportation and Pick Up Requirement indicated on the audition form/crew application.A: All cast and crew members must have a reliable mode of transportation to and from rehearsals to be in the show. Students must be picked up and exit the school building within 30 minutes of an school-based activity ending to mitigate unsupervised activity in the building. This means if a rehearsal ends at 5pm, students may wait inside to be picked up until 5:30pm, but then must leave building at the end of 30 minutes. Repeated late pick-ups create supervision and safety concerns, as staff are not compensated or responsible for supervising students after that window. If a parent/guardian cannot pick up their child on time and does not want them waiting alone outside without an adult present, they are expected to make alternate arrangements, such as a carpool. Ongoing issues may impact a student's continued participation in the production.
Q: I submitted a crew application/audition form but I'm not on the cast or crew list. Why?A: If you submit all required components on time you should find yourself on the cast or crew (depending on what you applied for). A number of factors can lead to students not being included on a cast/crew including, but not limited to the following:

failure to complete and SUBMIT Google Forms in their entirety. Check your email you put on the application for an auto-confirmation that your form was received.
failure to attend the required info meeting on Tues. Sept. 9th and/or bring the required completed show contract
repeated offenses of behavioral concerns in past productions that warrant removal from the drama club and mainstage productions

If you don't feel any of the following scenarios apply to you, speak to Ms. Peterson or Ms. Clugston.
