Filter Effects Exercise with Adobe Photoshop
Filters are used to change the appearance of an image, layer or selection in Photoshop. Filters are mathematical calculations that are applied to an image or a layer. Photoshop filters are grouped into 14 sub-menus.
In this project you will explore how filters can be used to change, distort, or manipulate an image. Try applying 2 to 5 different Filters to a single image and then save it to to your Google Drive folder.
Then try 2 to 5 different Filters to a different image and save that one as well.
Using Filters from the Filter Gallery Photoshop’s Filter Gallery is basically a one-stop place for working with filters in your documents. In the Filter Gallery, you can browse through many different types of filters, apply them individually to your image, or even stack them on top of one another like you would with layers. You can get to the Filter Gallery by going to Filter > Filter Gallery.
Step 1
Use Google Advanced Image Search and find 2 LARGE photos of something you like at least a 2MP (1600 x 1200) pixel or larger.
Save this photo to your Google Drive.
Both of these images should be in the THOUSDANDS for the pixel Width and Height.
Google Image Search > Tools > Size > Large
EXAMPLE HERE IS 1600 X 1200 PIXELS (see bottom left corner for photo dimensions in pixels)
Step 2
Open Adobe Photoshop
Step 3
From the File drop down menu select your first saved image and click Open.
Step 4
Go under the Filter Menu > select Filter Gallery
Step 5
You can preview the change of applying the Filter in the Preview Window.
Adjust the sliders to change the filter effect and appearance, and click OK when satisfied.
Step 6
Try a (second) different filter on this image. See what happens. If you like the effect, click OK. If not, try something else.
Step 7
Instead of removing the entire look of the Filter you can Fade the filter. This will give you entirely different looks to the filters.
Step 8
Try another filter (3rd) on this image. See what happens. If you like the effect, click OK. If not, try something else.
Step 10
Save this to Your Google Drive folder as Photoshop Filters 1 when finished.
Step 11
Open a new photograph and repeat the process using different filters. Multiple filters MUST be applied to this photo as well.
Save this to Your Google Drive folder as Photoshop Filters 2 when finished.
