Tips, Tricks and Troubleshooting:
Best Practices
Having Trouble with Read & Write?
Read & Write only works in CHROME within a Chromebook, laptop, or desktop. It does not work on tablets such as iPads.
Students need to be logged into their Google Account with the FCPS credentials.
Make sure students have linked their data when signing in. See screencast: https://bit.ly/2RZT33G
Read & Write versus Kami: The question to ask yourself is, “What tool do you want the student to use?" Once answered, take time to educate the student on how to open their assignments accurately. This document will help with any confusion. https://bit.ly/2zLxw90
Occasionally Read & Write will push out updates which requires the end user to "accept permission" to re-enable the extension. See these directions.
8 Helpful Tips to Include when Presenting Distance Learning Instruction with Google Slides
#1
Copy and paste these images on your Google Docs and Slides to guide students in using Read and Write.
#2:
Copy and paste these Google Slides (below) to easily introduce a Read and Write tool and it's feature. Click here to have access to the RW Folder.
#3:
Eliminate or limit screenshots with text as R/W does not always accurately read text in an image or include Alt-Text in your image.
#4
Keep text separate from images. Read and Write doesn't like text embedded in images.
#5:
Keep text in the top/down/ left right orientation. Read and Write cannot read text sideways (as pictured on the left side of this table). Eliminate tables and instead, present information in a list format. Read and Write can read playback easier.
#6. When asking students to Read Text:
Teach students to highlight text in small chunks when using Screenshot Reader
Utilize the Play/ Pause/ Stop feature
Use the Hover Tool bar, which is only available when viewing websites
# 7: Is your Text Accessible to students?
Use Kami to convert PDF text to OCR compatible text so it is accessible to students? Click Here for the Video.
# 8:
Spice up your Google Slide with Bitmoji's! Can students still read the text?
Yes! Try inserting alternative text so a Google Slide can still be read aloud: https://bit.ly/2zyN2oY
Best Practices when Using Schoology:
Make sure the Schoology settings are set up to set to populate one question per so students can easily use the Hover Tool in Read and Write for better independence.
Need to see if Schoology is running slow or is it just your wifi? Check this status board here:
