Math literacy in Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses is essential because it bridges classroom learning with real-world application, making mathematical concepts more relevant and accessible to students. In CTE programs, students routinely engage in hands-on tasks such as measuring materials, calculating costs, analyzing data, and interpreting technical specifications that require a solid understanding of math. By embedding math literacy into CTE instruction, students not only strengthen their problem-solving and critical thinking skills but also gain confidence in applying math in authentic workplace scenarios. This practical integration enhances student engagement, improves math achievement, and better prepares students for both industry certifications and success in high-demand careers.
Literacy instruction remains a vital component of CTE programs, as strong reading and vocabulary skills directly impact students’ ability to access, understand, and apply complex technical content. This year, we will continue to emphasize vocabulary development across all CTE courses to support students in mastering industry-specific language, improving comprehension of manuals, instructions, and certification materials. As we begin integrating more focused reading instruction throughout the year, our goal is to equip students with the literacy tools needed for both academic and career success.

Certifications are not "extra" they a core component to our CTE programing. Every HS program should be doing their part to suport students with the content, preparation, and testing of their related certifications. It should be made clear that when students take our classes, there is an expectation that the goal is that they are successful on an industry certification. 50% of FCPS students are a CTE concentrator or CTE completer. Every one of these students should have multiple attempts to earn a certification.
