The Constitution of the National English Honor Society:
Membership is an honor.
Selection is by the Faculty Advisory Council.
Once selected, members have the responsibility to demonstrate high standards including the maintenance of grades.
Three types of membership exist: active, alumni, honorary.
Transfers may be admitted to an existing NEHS chapter with a letter from the former chapter adviser/principal.
Membership may not be determined in any way on the basis of gender, race, religion, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, age or physical disability.
Acceptance into NEHS does not preclude automatic acceptance into Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society.
Application Process
Applicants must…
Have attended CHS for the equivalent of one semester prior to consideration. Waivers can be offered under special circumstances.
Must be a junior or senior
Have completed the equivalent of two semesters of English prior to consideration.
Have achieved an overall GPA of 3.0 prior to induction.
Have achieved a minimum English GPA of 3.0 prior to induction.
Include an original piece of writing (essay, short story, poem). Writing submissions may be academic or creative in nature.
Selection
Selection and acceptance shall be determined by the Faculty Advisory Council and shall be consistent with NEHS criteria.
Applicants will be notified by letter of acceptance into NEHS.
Membership
Members must stay in good academic standing in order to remain active in NEHS. Members whose grades drop below the minimums for two consecutive semesters shall be dismissed from NEHS. Such members may be reinstated when minimums are again met.
NEHS is a service organization. Members are required to complete ten service hours annually that support literacy outreach and/or literacy-based activities. (Mrs. Aungst has a form for you to keep track of your service hours.) Service hours must be completed by April 30th. We will discuss this in more detail later.
30.00 dues/fees that are due by October 31st and March 21st (More details to follow). The fees include your cord and certificate.
Failure to meet any of these requirements will cause removal from the National English Honor Society.
