Updates from Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School
On September 18th we celebrated Mary Ellen Henderson's birthday! Students learned about Mary Ellen Henderson's work in education and civil rights activism. Today, her grandson, Edwin Henderson came to share stories about her and her amazing work with students during lunch. He reminded students of the importance of perseverance! Throughout her life, she championed the belief that all students are "Smarties" - capable of great things. Shout out to the PTA for providing all of our students with Smarties to celebrate the big day.
Here are a few updates and reminders that are middle school specific:
Our after school clubs and activities are up and running. Please check out the Club List on the right to see our current offerings as well as our upcoming offerings.
Wow! We are already 4 weeks into the quarter. Now is the perfect time to talk with your student about their classes. How are they going? Any assessments soon?
Check PowerSchool & Schoology for grades, overdue work, future assessments
Reach out to teachers if you or your student have any concerns about a class
Our Student Council Association held its election for officer positions this week. All of our candidates ran great campaigns and should be very proud of their efforts! Congratulations to:

Week of September 23
We have another exciting week planned for Pack this week!
Monday - Students will have a dialogue with each other around this question: “What is a positive part of the school day for you? It can be seeing friends, Mr. Pickering’s morning announcements, a favorite class or subject, etc.” Dialogue circles promote communication skills, relationship building, and are a way for students and staff to connect on interests and preferences. See an example of the 6th grade slides here.
Tuesday - On Tuesday, we will learn more about the Husky at Hope pledge that we hear on the morning announcements. We will discuss the science of hope and positive self-talk. Here’s an example of the eighth grade slide deck.
Wednesday - We will continue reading chapters 9-10 in the book, The Seventh Most Important Thing. Staff and students will discuss the question, “Why might Junkman feel like close enough isn’t good enough?”
Thursday - On Thursday, we will learn about mindfulness and being present and aware of our surroundings.
We will focus on IB Learner Profile Traits: specifically Open-Mindedness.
Friday - Fun Friday! Students will be playing a game for Fun Friday in Pack!
We look forward to a great week!
Hi 6th Grade Families!
It’s been another exciting week here at Mary Ellen Henderson! Our 6th graders are diving into their personal narratives in Language and Literature, exploring their own stories and learning to express their thoughts creatively. Ask your student about the narrative they’re working on – you might hear some fascinating tales!
In Science, students had a blast with the Penny Droplets lab, experimenting with how many water droplets could fit on a penny. This fun activity sparked a lot of curiosity and excitement.
Pack class continues to be a highlight, with students enjoying activities and games that build teamwork and camaraderie. It’s wonderful to see them working together and having so much fun.
We also celebrated Mary Ellen Henderson’s birthday this week. Students learned about her contributions to education and civil rights, and everyone enjoyed a special treat of Smarties. It was a great way to honor her legacy.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend and look forward to another great week ahead.
Sincerely,
Rob Carey

Happy Friday 7th and 8th grade families,
This week was exciting for our 7th graders as they went on a field trip to Tinner Hill as part of their civics class. Tinner Hill holds historical significance as the site of the first rural branch of the NAACP, founded in 1915 by African American civil rights leaders, including Joseph Tinner. The neighborhood became a center for civil rights advocacy, challenging segregation and promoting equality in the early 20th century.
I also want to give a big shoutout to our 8th graders for the fantastic start they've had to the year. During my opening talk with them, I emphasized how they are now the leaders of the building, and they have truly risen to the occasion. They've set a positive tone for the entire school, and the younger students are following their great example. I'm incredibly proud of them and excited to build on this strong start as the year continues.
Have a great weekend!
