Updates from Meridian High School
Meridian Families,
This week at the high school we held “Class Conversations” with all of the students. These are grade-level assemblies where we gather all the members of each class community over the course of 4 days to welcome them back to school, challenge them with this year’s goals and messages, introduce new faces, and review some essential school rules and policies. You can see what we shared with students here.
I shared with students a story about when I attended George Mason High School (way back in the stone ages) and ran track for the Mustangs. You’ll have to ask them about my metaphor, but it was connected to one of our themes for the year. We reviewed new and essential school and district policies and we share the slides as simply an overview, so that you can see what they see.
I also spoke with the students about Mustang Pride and what it means to belong to a community, such that you take pride not only in your own work and achievements but in the work and achievements of your peers in your community. That community may be your friend group, your family, your math class, your soccer team, your whole grade, or better yet the whole school. We also want our students to define for themselves what success means in their endeavors. Each and every student matters as a member of our Mustang community and within each of their smaller individual communities as well. Their definition of success for whatever they set forth to do will help them see that they matter to each of those communities. As I explained to students, my definition of taking pride in one's work means putting forth your most authentic self in whatever you do. No cutting corners, no dishonesty, no pretending to be something you are not. Just doing the best you can at the moment. The results will be a true reflection of the beauty of yourself.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Peter Laub
If your student is interested in taking an AP Exam for a course that we do not offer at Meridian, have your student visit Mr. Amerine in the Main Office to register. The cost of the AP Exams this year is $99 and the school deadline to register is October 15th. If you have any questions please email Mr. Amerine amerinea@fccps.org.
If your student needs to leave school during the school day, please let Attendance know by email or voicemail as soon as possible. Your student's absence will be entered into PowerSchool where their teacher will see they need to leave early.
Your student will then be able to sign themselves out in the Main Office. There is no need for you to come into the school.
