Updates from Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School
Here are a few updates and reminders that are middle school specific:
The school day is 8:30 AM - 3:10 PM. Students can arrive as early as 8:00 AM, but they will have to wait in the cafeteria until 8:15 AM. At that time they can go to their lockers.
At the end of the day, please do not wait right outside of the school for your student. Please wait for your student in the car line or another designated meeting point.
Late buses will begin on Monday, September 9th. Students who are staying for a club or after school activity can take the late bus home. The late bus departs the secondary campus at 4:45 PM. Please use this link to the late buses to best determine the stop closest to your home. There are 16 buses for the regular runs, but the late bus runs are condensed to 4 buses. Your normal stop may not be an option on the late bus runs.
We are finalizing our club offerings and they will be rolled out to students next week or the week after ~ Stay Tuned!
Students in 7th and 8th Grade chose their preferred Flexes for this year earlier this week. They will move into Intervention/Enrichment Flexes beginning on September 6. 6th Grade students will have an Executive Functioning Flex through the first Quarter.
You can see the Flex offerings for each grade here! (7th Grade Flex Options) (8th Grade Flex options)
STAR Testing is next week through Flex classes.
Monday - 8th Grade Reading
Tuesday - 6th and 7th Grade Math
Wednesday - 8th Grade Math
Thursday - 6th and 7th Grade Reading
We’d like to invite you to our Back to School Night on August 28, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. You can expect to receive your schedule for the evening early next week.
As a reminder, parking on our secondary campus is limited. While we’ll do our best to make as many spaces available as possible, they tend to fill up quickly. If you need additional parking, the new garage across the lot and the Virginia Tech lot are great alternatives.
We look forward to a fantastic evening together!
Time to pick our your outfit and get a fresh cut to perfectly capture your middle school years.

Dear Sixth Grade Families!
What an amazing first week. Team Henderson was so excited to welcome our sixth graders, and they did not disappoint!
From the smiles on their faces, the energy in the halls, and the quick understanding of all things middle school, it has honestly been one of the best openings ever. On behalf of Team Henderson, we want to send a huge thank you to you (parents/guardians) for supporting your students and our staff as worked to guarantee a safe, comfortable, and personalized learning environment for our newest Huskies!
Thank you and have a great weekend!
Rob Carey
6th Grade Administrator
Hello 7th and 8th Grade Families,
It was wonderful to see your students return to the building, and a pleasure to welcome new students to the Husky family! We had a fantastic first week as students met their new teachers and settled back into their routines. Our pod meetings helped kick off the year with warm welcomes and clear expectations for the months ahead.
We’re looking forward to an amazing year of learning and growth together!
Please feel free to reach out if there’s anything you need.
Sincerely,
Adam White
