Updates from Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School
Here are a few updates and reminders that are middle school specific:
On September 5th and 6th, during PE classes, students will take part in prevention lessons focused on bullying and harassment. These sessions will be conducted by the school counselor, grade-level administrator, and the School Resource Officer (SRO). The goal of these lessons is to help students recognize bullying and harassment and to provide them with the tools and knowledge needed to report such incidents effectively.
Late buses begin on Monday, September 9th. Students who are staying for a club or after school activity can take the late bus home. The late bus departs the secondary campus at 4:45 PM. Please use this link to the late buses to best determine the stop closest to your home. There are 16 buses for the regular runs, but the late bus runs are condensed to 4 buses. Your normal stop may not be an option on the late bus runs.
Here is some preliminary info about afterschool clubs. We are still working through the details for some of the clubs. Stay Tuned!
Does your student want to ride the bus home with a friend? Please contact the front office at 703-720-5702 or send an email to attendancemehms@fccps.org. Please include information on who your student will be riding home with, the bus letter and the stop. We will then write out a bus pass for your student. Please note: riding on a different bus is contingent on space availabilty.
We have exciting activities planned for next week's Pack.
Tuesday: Students will engage in a community building conversation about their favorite season.
Wednesday: Students will continue to read our One Book Wednesday, reading The Seventh Most Important Thing by Shelley Pearsall.
Thursday: Students will engage in a lesson on Teamwork. Here's the sixth grade video.
Friday: Friday is Fun Friday! Students will engage in a fun, collaborative activity.
Thank you to all of the parents and guardians who participated in our Back to School Night. We hope that you enjoyed visiting our classrooms and hearing from our amazing group of teachers. If you were unable to attend, we have included the admin video for your viewing pleasure.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
I hope this message finds you well. We wanted to extend a huge thank you for supporting another successful week. Our newest Huskies have settled in so nicely and continue to bring fresh energy to our halls!
You will notice, that in this portion of our newsletters, we will regularly highlight school operations, instructional lessons/student experiences, and unique details that make MEHMS the best! Today's spotlight is on Lunch/Recess.
Our students eat lunch every day during their Block 5 (odd day) and Block 6 (even days.) Our lunch block is split into portions, to hopefully meet the needs of all students. When students finish eating, they have three options:
Students can:
Outdoor Recess: Middle School Recess takes place on the upper turf field. Students can bring equipment from home, utilize our recess equipment, or just enjoy some fresh air!
Indoor Recess (Library): Students have the option to go to the library after they're done eating. Students can play pool, air hockey, read, and more.
Stay in the cafeteria: Students always have the option to stay (finish eating) and hang in the cafeteria (Ask your kids about Mr. Pickering’s best dad jokes!)
Lunch/recess is a highlight for many of our kids! Whether they're playing football, hanging with friends, or reading silently, its a great chance to unwind!

Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we wrap up the second week of school, it's great to see students settling back into the routine. They've done an excellent job adhering to our new cell phone and technology guidelines. In the classroom, we're diving into content and projects, and students are engaged and focused.
Through our PBIS rewards system, we’ve been awarding Bark Bucks for positive behavior we see throughout the building. Students can use these to purchase items from our school store or to make selections for the PBIS reward days happening throughout the year. Additionally, our 7th and 8th graders completed the STAR assessments for both reading and math during flex this week.
We’re thrilled with how the year is starting and hope your child is feeling just as excited. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly.
Thank you for your continued support, and I wish you a wonderful Labor Day weekend!
Best regards,
Adam White
7th and 8th Grade Administrator
