The Tates Creek High School Marching Band is a competitive marching band. It is made up of students from Tates Creek High School. Additionally, students in special programs (like STEAM) that live in the Tates Creek area as well as some 8th grade students at our feeder middle schools (Southern Middle and Tates Creek Middle) may participate. In order to participate, you must be enrolled in band class, but you are not required to participate just because you are in the band class, making it possible for our student athletes to remain in band while still participating in their sport. However, we do still have several athletes that are in marching band if their seasons do not conflict.
Competitive marching band incorporates marching and playing, as well as many other elements of theater and dance to entertain and tell a story through their show. Students will develop not only their playing skills, but their movement and athleticism, as well as team building and social skills. It will also helps students develop a friend base that will be part of their high school experience. For your reference, there is a video linked below to give you an idea what it is we actually do in today's marching band.
The marching band season is approximately 3 1/2 months long that begins with our summer camp in mid-July and ends with State Championships on the last weekend of October. Our schedule during the season allows for plenty of rehearsal time, as well as time/days off. We think it is important to have enough rehearsal time to compete with the best in the State and to have a balance in that schedule for down time. You can check out our full season calendar in the Calendar and Schedule section, but below is a rough schedule for our season.
Band Camp: July 21-25 / July 28-Aug 1 / Aug 4-7 (Students attend all weeks of band camp. The first 2 weeks are 9am-5pm and the last is evenings only.)
After-School Rehearsals: We rehearse on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 4pm-6:30pm. This allows time for students to work on hoemwork or meet with teachers/make up assignments right after school. It also allows for middle school students to arrive near the beginning of rehearsal.
Performances: We will perform at home football games on some Friday nights during the season. Our competitions will take place on Saturdays. Competitions will take the whole day most times, but we spread them out and have some weekends off during the season. See the calendar for full deatils.
