The SMS Dress Code is designed to keep the primary focus on teaching and learning. We encourage our students to gain recognition through working hard and studying, not through inappropriate dress. All SMS students should think highly enough of themselves to dress for success on a daily basis while at school.
Clothing Allowed by the Dress Code:
- short or long sleeved collard shirts. If the shirt has button, it must be appropriately buttoned.
- SMS issued t-shirts or non-hooded sweatshirts.
- Sweatshirts/sweaters/lightweight jackets can only be worn over a shirt allowed by the dress code.
- Chino/cargo/jean pants, shorts, or skirts, which sit at the students' natural waist.
- Shorts length must be able to pass the flamingo test, and skirts must be knee length. Leggings may only be worn under shorts/skirts allowed by the dress code.
- Shoes must be worn at all times.
- Headphones/earbuds are to be used for instructional purposes only.
NOT Allowed by the Dress Code:
- Tops that have scoop necks, hoods, or are too revealing in cut (exposed midriff, low neckline, off the shoulder, or bare backs)
- Non-SMS issued t-shirts
- Sweatpants, spandex, leggings, yoga pants, pajamas, athletic shorts, nylon or fleece pants.
- Inappropriate/offensive language/symbols
- sheer or see-through material
- Holes that reveal skin or undergarments
- Any visible undergarments
- House shoes, bedroom slippers, or heelies
- Hats, bandanas, comb, picks, chains or belts/wallets/pants, and sunglasses
- All outerwear including backpacks, drawstring bags, oversized purses, hoodies, coats, oversized jackets must be removed and secured in a locker by 9:05 a.m.
Consequences for Dress Code Violations:
- 1st offense: warning, correct the issue, contact parent if necessary
- 2nd offense: correct the issue, lunch detention
- 3rd offence: office referral, SAFE time
If the violation cannot be corrected then SAFE time will become necessary.
