Second Semester

UNIT FOUR: BIOMIMICRY (1-LS1-1)

We used materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs. We designed houses out of hexagons (like bees), we developed all sorts of swim gear using our observations about aquatic animals (webbed feet, clear eyelids, scales), and some of us even thought it might be fun to carry around a shell for protection like a snail! ( 1-LS1-1 )

UNIT FIVE: LIGHT (1-PS4-3)

We took advantage of the sunshine to investigate the effect of placing different objects in the path of light. We used transparencies, sharpies, and construction paper to design shadow puppets. (1-PS4-3)

UNIT SIX: WAVES: SOUND (1-PS4-1)

UNIT ONE: STRUCTURE/FUNCTION and OFFSPRING (1-LS1-1, 1-LS3-1)

We made lots of observations of our living organisms in the lab. We observed earthworms, cockroaches, and mealworms. We were able to compare the adult cockroaches to their offsprings as well as observe the life cycle of the meal worms and super worms to discuss the similarities and differences between the adults and their offspring (1-LS1-1, 1-LS3-1).

Adult, "baby" and pupated SUPER WORMS!

UNIT TWO: SPACE SYSTEMS, PATTERNS AND CYCLES (1-ESS1-1)

We made observations of shadows throughout the day to see if there was a pattern in the sun's movement across the sky. We also explored the same idea using paper "garden gnomes" and flashlights in our classroom (1-ESS1-1).

UNIT THREE: WAVES AND LIGHT (1-PS4-2)

We investigated placing objects made with different materials in the path of a beam of light. We got arty with it by making stain glass windows and snow flakes (1-PS4-2).
