Parent Involvement

Hi Parents,

Thank you so much for checking out my class website. I'm thrilled to be working with your student this year. My biggest hope is that we are able to successfully transition our students onto their next phase of life. With five sections of English 4, I hope for all my students to leave Dunbar with a plan for their future. In addition to my senior English sections, I'm also teaching courses in Arts and Humanities. With a team effort, I'm certain we can prepare our students for life after high school.

This page is to facilitate helpful communication between parents, students, and their teachers. I welcome parent involvement in my classes, so if you'd like to help please reach out! See below for helpful conversation starters, resources, and communication tips for talking with your student.

Conversation Starters

The typical "how was your day?" question doesn't always give parents an honest depiction of what their child learned that day in school. In an effort to engage in more open conversation with your student consider asking questions like:

"What did you learn today?" Even better, ask about specific subjects.

"Can you tell me what standard you talked about in __(class)__?" Teachers have to tell students what they're going to accomplish during the day (and the standard should be posted in the room all day every day). Asking your student this should at least give you an idea of what they did and if they understood the concept.

Feel free to ask me questions!

Specifically, ask me what we're working on in class and what that is going to entail for your child.

Let's schedule a conference about your child's strengths and weaknesses in English. Together, we can come up with a game plan to address and overcome the struggles your child has in this subject.

Don't know how to help your child with their homework?

I'm always available to help via email, but sometimes a faster way could be to use the online Lexington Public Library online tutoring service. It's completely free, but you will need a library card number. Go to their website for more info: http://www.lexpublib.org
