Choice based OPEN STUDIO day in third grade class
STUDIO Day based on a theme of Dia de Muertos 5th grade
Tour of our art studio- when it was very clean :-)
Art Show set up using tri-fold presentation boards.
I often demo a technique or concept, such as symmetry ( in these examples) that also ties to a theme, art style, artist, or culture. This mini lesson was part of a unit about how all cultures create art to celebrate and honor traditions.
When I first implemented choice based art, I had tables dedicated to specific art process and often used themes to provide guidance for students as they developed creative courage and skills. As my comfort level and student autonomy with this type of instruction evolved, I moved to buffet style process stations. Students now plan their artwork, select materials, create, and reflect on their progress with greater independence.
Experimentation and collaboration are frequent companions in our art studio. We have lots of fun!
Fiber arts is always a favorite of many students. I developed a group of scaffolded skill builders that develop basic skills so students can more successfully create independent work in this process. I have found it is vital to practice baseline skills before offering more complex options.
Students plan in their sketchbook before beginning on a new artwork.
