What is the STEM Bus?

Fayette County, in partnership with the Kloiber Foundation and several community partners, have refurbished an old school bus into a STEM mobile learning lab.

The mission of the STEM Bus is to ignite curiosity and interest in STEM related career fields.

Our instructional focus is on third and fourth graders. Our STEM Learning Coaches will support all grade levels.

When students enter this 40 ft. mobile classroom, they will interact with hands-on STEM learning activities. Some highlights of the bus are the constellation lighting on the roof, six magnetic dry erase stations, up-to-date technology like iPads/Chromebooks, robots, virtual reality headsets, and digital microscopes. Content and activities are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards, KAS Technology and Computer Science Standards, and International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards for Students.

Principals have been notified to sign up for the STEM Bus to visit their school. We are unable to make it to every school every year, but will offer priority scheduling on a rotation. When the bus arrives, each class in the selected grade level will have a rotation of 45 minutes on the STEM bus and 45 minutes of in-class hands-on activities that will be provided to teachers.

How will it work?

Once a school has filled out the initial form, they will receive an email to confirm their date and additional information to plan for their visit. Teaching teams should then discuss which module meets their needs and parking information for the bus. Please be aware the bus will be at the school throughout the day, and may have to stay parked overnight if it is a two day event.

Please have the following information in order to fill out the registration form and choose a date on the calendar:

  • How many 3rd grade classes (this determines how many consecutive days you book)

  • How many students in each class

  • Your lunch times (Each class will get 45 minutes on the bus and 45 minutes of in class STEM activities)

  • Where the bus can park (potentially overnight)

  • Which module you would like taught

There will be 2 models to choose from; the 6 day model and the 3 day model. Each one provides teachers with instructional pre-work and videos for students to complete to prepare for our visit as well as a follow-up task to allow students to reflect and self-assess on their work from our visit.

Once you have filled out the registration form, a STEM Learning Coach will work up a schedule and send for confirmation. The STEM Bus will work around your lunch time as best as possible. We will touch base with you a week before you are scheduled to confirm details and give any information the students may need to know beforehand.
