Purpose-Driven Learning: Empowering Student-Led Community Change
Purpose-Driven Learning: Empowering Student-Led Community Change
Mr. Adrian Johnson, STEM
In this book, William Damon argues that for students to find purpose, schools must look beyond the standard curriculum to offer a broader "menu of options" for engagement.

I plan to implement activities and challenges that help students develop a sense of purpose through rigorous, meaningful tasks that CONNECT to others and their community.

-Frederick Douglass
I was called to leadership to be a light for young individuals, especially young males in school and the community. I never thought about teaching until I started my AAU organization years ago. After starting, I quickly understood that my influence could reach further than the basketball court and could help shape the next generations thinking, confidence, and discipline. I also wanted to show young people that you can always lead with love and be successful in whatever you put your mind to. I didn’t realize until after I coached LTMS basketball a few years ago that my presence was need in our community. I worked hard to shape the way my young men saw teamwork, self love, and accountability.
I did not have a male teacher until I was in the 7th grade and I have always wanted to make an impact with younger minds. Not having a dad or strong male role models in my family, I always wanted a man (teacher, coach, preacher, relative) to tell me I was doing a good job, or to keep going, don’t quit! I do all I can to engage with young students in a positive way with loving encouragement, accountability!
Some of the values that move me to act are kindness, respect, accountability. These values have always been important to me because this was the type of household I grew up in. Humble beginnings and knowing that I come from a hardworking family is what instilled these values in me. I realize that I am now the one that will push not only the generations in my family further, but I am also shaping the way people in the community see a hardworking, involved, loving dad and educator.
Most of the positive stories I have in my younger life involve my mother, a former educator and single mother of three and how she influenced many people around her! The ultimate giver! The ultimate lover! The ultimate leader! Still to this day teaching others around her and being an amazing light for my children and those around her. I now strive to show this type of example everywhere I go.
