Optional Tours for Sunday, November 17th

The tours on Sunday are optional but highly encouraged to discover this historic city!

Learn more about the three options below, then indicate your choice of tour on the registration form. The tour price will be included in your invoice to prepay via bank transfer. Questions? Email the organizers at rc5@fawco.org.

Historic City Tour

Following the church service, we will walk the historical center of Leipzig.

Where: start at the Thomaskirche, Thomaskirchhof 18, 04109 Leipzig

Start time: 11:00 am; lasts 1.5 hours

Price: €7.00

The tour will lead through the city's colorful past and lively present. Starting with the historic city center which includes:

• the market place with the impressive Old Town Hall,
• medieval St. Thomas‘s Church, where composer Johann Sebastian Bach worked,
• the oldest coffeehouse in Germany - the “Coffeebaum” - from 1711,
• St. Nichola's Church, where the Peaceful Revolution of 1989 started, and
• the unique passage and courtyard system including the legendary traditional restaurant “Auerbachs Keller”.

Each place will help you discover more about the diverse traditions, personalities and history of Leipzig.

Total Price for Tour Option 1: €7.00

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy left many traces in Leipzig: he was the youngest director ever of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, he founded the first conservatory in Germany, and on his initiative the world´s first monument for Johann Sebastian Bach was constructed. You can visit his last and only preserved flat where he lived with his family and then died much too early in 1847 at the age of 38. The elegant home was restored to the original state with authentic furniture and watercolor paintings of Felix Mendelssohn himself.

The living quarters are on the first floor, reached via the historic staircase. The main room is the music salon where regular concerts are held every Sunday at 11:00. On the ground floor is the Effectorium where you can practice to be a conductor to set pieces of his music - a lot of fun.

Where: start at the Mendelssohn House, Goldschmidtstraße 12, 04103 Leipzig

Start time: 12:30 am; lasts 1.5 hours

Price: €7.00

(This route is the same as in Option 1.) The tour will lead through the city's colorful past and lively present. Starting with the historic city center which includes:
