Within the field of Speech Language Pathology, literacy and reading is a topic that often becomes ignored or forgotten when it comes to the assessment and treatment of a child with a language disorder. While the relationship between language development and early literacy skills is complex, it is clear that both the ability to process phonologically and orthographically place a vital role in word identification and therefore reading (Owens, 2024).
As mentioned in class and throughout the text, the various aspects of language development are essential for reading and reading comprehension. An example of this is inference in reading. Casey (2022) explains the ability to infer a text refers to the process of gathering information and making a guess on what the information that is not clearly stated could mean. This process could be referred to as “reading between the lines”. The way to make inferences is to recall what we know about the world around us, and use this comprehension to make connections with the world and the text (Casey, 2022). Inference can be gathered by asking questions regarding the character’s perceived emotional response, story predictions, reasoning for occurrences, reasoning for character’s actions, etc (Owens, 2024). Again, as mentioned in class and in the text, imagine how extremely this task would be for a child with a pragmatic (or social) communication disorder.
To further the conversation on inferencing, let’s discuss the two types of inferencing that occur; logical inference and reason-based inference. Logical inference is obtained by drawing conclusions from a specific occurrence to a general one (Casey, 2022). For example, concluding that someone is sick from food poisoning after eating raw meat and running to the restroom. Reason-based inference works in an opposing way, starting with a general hypothesis and then making a specific conclusion (Casey, 2022). An example of this would be assuming the rollercoasters at an amusement park are closed for the day due to anticipated storms, knowing that rollercoasters cannot operate in severe weather.

Literacy development is a critical aspect of a child’s academic success and overall communication abilities. As highlighted in Chapter 13 of Language Disorders: A Functional Approach to Assessment and Intervention in Children (7th ed.), speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play a vital role in identifying, assessing, and intervening in literacy impairments. Given that reading and writing are essential for full participation in society, SLPs must collaborate with educators and families to support language and literacy growth in children with language disorders.
SLPs’ Role in Literacy Intervention
SLPs contribute to literacy development in various ways:
Early Identification: SLPs screen for risk factors, such as phonological processing difficulties, delayed vocabulary development, and poor narrative skills.
Assessment: Using standardized tests, observations, and functional literacy tasks, SLPs assess phonological awareness, orthographic knowledge, and reading comprehension.
Intervention Strategies: SLPs implement evidence-based interventions, such as phonological awareness training, morphological instruction, and shared book reading to enhance literacy skills (Owens, 2024).
Collaboration: SLPs work with teachers, parents, and reading specialists to create supportive literacy environments and embed language-rich activities into daily instruction.
Evidence-Based Literacy Interventions
Research supports the effectiveness of explicit, structured literacy instruction in improving reading and writing skills. Key strategies include:
Phonological Awareness Training: Teaching children to manipulate sounds in words improves decoding skills.
Morphological Awareness Instruction: Helping students recognize prefixes, suffixes, and root words enhances vocabulary and comprehension.
Interactive Reading Strategies: Engaging children in discussions about text meaning fosters inferencing and critical thinking skills.
SLPs are integral to literacy intervention, bridging the gap between oral language and reading proficiency. By implementing targeted strategies and collaborating with educators, SLPs can improve literacy outcomes for children with language impairments. As the field of speech-language pathology continues to evolve, the role of SLPs in literacy will remain essential in fostering academic success and lifelong learning.

Developmental Language Disorder
Developmental language disorders have deficiencies in primarily semantics, nonverbal short-term memory, and spelling unlike other common learning disorders they have a different background. One of the greatest risk factors with reading difficulties are children who have a history of articulation and receptive and expressive language deficiencies (Owens, 2024). Developmental language disorder can be in multiple areas like talking, reading, and writing. It is considered to be a neurodevelopmental condition that comes to play in a child’s early childhood and it can continue through adulthood.

Dyslexia
Dyslexia is defined as specific learning disability with impairment in reading in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) (Owens, 2024). They also define it as neurodevelopmental disorder typified by impairments in decoding, word reading accuracy, fluency, and spelling. Children with dyslexia normally are significantly behind in phonological awareness and language skills. Reading starts with the foundation knowledge with phonological awareness properties. Families with a history of dyslexia have children with dyslexia and persistent deficits in phonology. Preschoolers that need support in phonological awareness should receive additional support with letter identification and rapid automatized naming (RAN) (Owens, 2024).
What is the difference?
Dyslexia can but not always co-exist with developmental disorder. Dyslexia does not have semantical processing deficits, where as those with DLD normally have both phonology and semantic processing issues. Children with just dyslexia can have poor word finding skills, vocabulary, sentence repetition and syntactic comprehension and still score above average on standardized testing (Owens, 2024). Both are unexpected due to the absents of an intellectual deficits and there is adequate environmental stimulate (Owens, 2025). There are 51% of children with dyslexia who also have DLD and 55% of children DLD have Dyslexia.

SLPs can help determine the metacognitive processes that children display when they engage them in a think-aloud task. Think-alouds are useful tools that involve the child sharing their thinking process while they’re reading so that the SLP can gauge their comprehension of the passage (Owens, 2024). Through think-aloud activities, SLPs can model comprehension strategies on how to:
· Access prior knowledge
· Generate predictions
· Create mental images
· Develop inferences
· Effectively problem-solve
· Overcome challenges associated with word recognition and comprehension, and self-monitor comprehension (ICI, 2021).
Think-alouds help enrich students’ academic vocabulary and help them to problem solve when reading challenges arise.
Think-alouds can be beneficial prior to a reading activity, as it aids readers in linking existing knowledge with the text subject.
Prior knowledge of a topic can be especially important for understanding text as illustrated by the “baseball experiment” by researchers Recht and Leslie who found that just because a child was able to read words fluently did not necessarily mean that they understood what they are reading; however, weaker readers with prior knowledge of the topic (baseball) performed as well as the stronger readers (Core Knowledge, n.d.).
