ORDER ONE TRANSPONDER OF EACH OF THE CLASSES YOU WANT TO RACE! And order a spare if you can.
The transponder is a small electronic device installed inside the car and used to get your laptimes.
We use the EASY LAP timing system because it's the most affordable system. Transponders are $15 ordered from China and $30 ordered from the US.
Get the DasMikro DSK123 (shown above) because it comes with the Futaba connectors which are standard on 1:10 and 1:12 cars. Order it well in advance (AliExpress), it usually takes 10-15 days to arrive
If you're in a hurry order and Easylap transponder (shown above) in the US from Amain, Kennon Hobbies, or Hobby Addicts (Bay Area local) - $25~30. They are made for mini-z and have smaller connectors so you'll also need to get JST1.5 to Futaba connector in order to plug it to your receiver or a spliter.
Your transponder must be connected to a power source in your car.
Traxxas, many RTR, Tamiya TT02s, and Kit trucks and cars have regular receivers, so you can connect them to a free channel.
Arrma cars have all-in-one ESCs and receivers, so you need to connect the transponder to the servo using a splitter
The transponders need to see the timing gantry through a hole on the body or a window
If your vehicle has a transparent windshield, you can just tape your transponder to the chassis under the window. It's best to prop it up as close to the window as possible so it can "see" the gantry better.
But if your body is fully painted (most RTR cars), you'll need to make a hole somewhere on the hood or at the base of the windshield and place the IR emitter (it looks like a small bulb) in the middle of the hole, then tape or hot-glue the transponder to the body. Then you'll need to make sure you have a cable long enough to connect to the power source. Finally, the cable needs to be secured as best as possible so it doesn't get ripped during a crash.
On vehicles that don't have a 2-in-1 ESC/Receiver - like the Arrma Fury - you'll need to get a splitter cable so you can tap power from the connection to the servo.
