Shane- I feel like I've gotten a lot done this week. I hope to spend a few more weeks researching and trying to get funding and/or a grant. Soon we will begin ordering what we need and figuring out what were going to plant for the spring season. I'm thinking a lot about what we're going to do with the bees after Addie and I graduate. I plan on making the hives portable so we can take the bees with us wherever we go. I think I'll want to start with the same number of hives Rusty Paul started with, 5 hives. I want to play both sides of the honey business by renting the bees to farmers to pollinate their crops. I also will collect and sell the beeswax, propolis and of course the honey.
Addie- I feel we have done a good amount depending on the stuff we have so far. Today (Friday) I would like to go to this little bee farm called Georgia Honey Farm. It looks cool and on the website it tells a lot about bees and the honey is natural. I would like to go over there and talk to the owner of the place but if the owner is not there today I will try to schedule something so we can interview her. Overall I think the last few weeks have been going good. Yesterday Jo went to interview the mayor of Sandy Springs but sadly I couldn't go because I was busy.
Shane- This week we did a lot of research on financial options and supplies. I've used my interview with the mayor to encourage me to make the right choices. For example he told me stories of getting stung due to faulty equipment, so Addie and I will not be going cheap on the suits. Overall, I'm worried that we won't get enough funding to handle all the expenses.
Addie- This week we found possibly another person we can interview. The person is the owner of some small honey place called Georgia Honey Farm. I got the owners email from someone working there and also a few pieces of paper with information from the place. We also found a website that has good priced beekeeping suits. Other than that this week we mainly focused on the equipment. The equipment I believe was 60 bucks for a whole suit which is a good price for a beekeeping suit. It was also made out of good materials and the reviews are good.
Addie- I Interviewed the person in Georgia Honey Farm. We got a sheet full of information and a list of plants and flowers to grow around the beehive. I think the project has gone pretty good so far. I have found a bunch of websites with information but we have picked one. Other than gathering information so far we have been talking about the project and deciding stuff.
Addie- I then decided the next thing to do would be to pick the beehive I want to bring in. I did my research and it turns out a Langstroth beehive would be the best. A deep beehive would be better than a medium. A deep hive is typically better for beginner beekeepeers. Other than that the week has gone well.
Addie- I did my reaserch on a Langstroth hive. I also found a few books online to read. I had to compare all the books to pick the right one. I picked the book Beekkeeping For Beginners. A week or so later I ordered the book and got it here. It is a pretty cool book. It tells you everything about beekeeping. It even talks about the different hives. It even has a chart comparing the hives to each other and shows the positive and negative effects of 3 hives. It even talks about all the tools needed to start beekeeping.
Addie- This week went pretty well. I got to read some of the book I got and got to gather information on different types of hives. I'm still looking at a Langstroth beehive as the hive to bring in. I do not really know yet though.
