Our annual LRC Staff Open Day is on Wednesday 24th September. Come along to meet the LRC Team and explore the curriculum support available to all Staff and Students in the College. Come and have a look at the exciting fiction and non-fiction table displays too, and get to know the LRC better.
The Primary Schools Book Festival was a fantastic success with students from Cherrywood Primary School and Frimley CofE attending an exciting morning at the Sixth Form College Farnborough. The pupils enjoyed two amazing workshops one focusing on Manga drawing with the incredible Chie Kutsuwada, and one exploring writing poetry with the wonderful Paul Giffney. The pupils also enjoyed a fun festival themed break with literary games, colouring in and prizes, supported by members of the Student Union and the LRC Team.
The Prospect Trust Book Festival was a great success, students from Tomlinscote and The Sixth Form College Farnborough loved working together with Richy to complete timed drawing challenges, complete a started comic strip, and create their own comic strip. Students from Yr12 also had the benefit of two Q&A sessions with Richy, which provided wonderful insights into planning work, overcoming writer's block, how to get published, and trips to being a freelance artist.
We are very excited to announce the return of the Prospect Trust Book Festival, which we will be holding on Tuesday 13th May. This is an exciting half day event where students from each setting in the Prospect Trust will be invited to attend a Workshop delivered by the amazing Richy K. Chandler, who is a brilliant author and illustrator. Richy will then be hosting a fantastic Q&A exclusively for Year 12 Students, discussing his career as an author and illustrator, and offering industry insights which will be invaluable to those considering working in this industry. Scan the QR Code on the poster to sign up to attend the Q&A Session.
The LRC have launched a brand new programme of Workshops which we will be delivering at Lunchtimes in the first week back after the Easter Holidays!
Workshop 1: 'Developing Independent Study Skills' will discuss the importance of wider reading and reading for pleasure, and provide support in how to use Accessit to its full potential,
Workshop 2: 'Developing Research Skills' will show you how to conduct effective research, how to use our free online subscriptions, and provide referencing advice.
At the beginning of February the LRC Team held a Customer Focused Week in all four rooms. The whole team worked together to gain feedback about the LRC, the services we provide, the support we offer, and your general reading habits.
The main feedback we received is that many students struggle to find the time to read, which is a real shame. Many of you who are keen readers prefer to buy your own copies of books, and build your own 'library' at home. Remember we do have a well stocked Library here, you can always borrow a book before deciding to purchase your own copy. We will have an exciting 'try before you buy' display in the Library soon, keep an eye out for it.
The other main feedback received is that many students do not know who the LRC team is, and what support we offer, so we will be running a new presentation in all four LRC rooms after the Easter holidays, and keep an eye on our College News inserts for reminders about Accessit and the LRC in general.
Sign up for the monthly Book Subscription service and we will hand-pick books for you! Our choices are based on a monthly theme, linked to current trends, and have them ready for you to collect!
This year the theme for World Book Day is 'Read Your Way'. The LRC is celebrating this with our 'Read Your Way' display in all of the LRC rooms. We have also created an exciting 'Read Your Way' Quick List on Accessit, with a wide range of free resources to encourage you to 'read your way' including audiobooks, short stories, poetry and articles and videos discussing the benefits of reading.
Come and have a look at these lovely new displays in all the LRC rooms.
We are hosting our first annual Student Resource Engagement Week in the Library from 3rd to 7th February 9 - 3 every day. We have displays showcasing all the support the LRC offers all students in the college, and LRC team members on hand to answer any questions and chat about support. Please come down and have a look, we would love your feedback too.

Our annual LRC Staff Open Day is on Monday 16th September. Come along to explore the support available to Staff and Students, and have a go at the interactive elements designed to help you understand the online subscriptions we have, and how reading fiction can help with your subjects.
Our yearly, popular LRC Research Based Workshops are coming back this autumn term so be sure to be on a look out for the posters when visiting one of the LRCs. The purpose of these workshops is to not only help you utilise the college resources to the fullest but to also guide you on how to use them effectively.
Our intention is to run five different workshops that target different needs, which are:
Introduction to the LRC & Library
Wider Reading for Success
Effective Research Skills
Preparing for University

Due to popular demand, our Book Services will be re-launching during the Autumn term 2024 with a whole new look and feel. Keep your eyes peeled for more information!
The Autumn term marks the launch of our new F6th Book Club. Members of F6th Book Club will be given the opportunity to read and review an exciting range of new fiction and also join with other readers to take part in book-related activities and events hosted by the LRC.
Students and staff can join F6th Book Club by completing a Google form . After signing up members can choose from a range of brand new fiction books - these will be advance copies sent directly from the publisher before their general publication date. Our members will then be able to post online reviews on our Book Club forum hosted by Padlet. Book Club members can also access the forum to read about book-related news and information, including details of regular “readers’ events” held in the college Library.
Take a look at the examples of advance copies we have already received this year:
On Tuesday 7th May, we received a visit from a very special friend! Barli, the Bernese Mountain Dog, came into the Library during lunch to visit all of our customers. We often embrace Therapy Dog visits, especially during exam season when students stress levels can be higher, so were very happy for the company!
You can see photos from all our Therapy Dog visits over the last few years on our Awareness Days image carousel.
This year we held an entire week of activities around World Book Days theme, 'Read Your Way'. Students and staff took part in various voting schemes such as 'The Worst Book You've Ever Read' and 'Book vs Film: Your preference'. Students could also find FREE books dotted around the College in key places, left by our in-house 'Book Fairy'. We also hosted a Reading Survey to find out more about our customers reading habits, which will help shape the future of the Library here at The Sixth Form College Farnborough. Watch this space!
