DEPARTMENT COLLABORATION FOR SUBJECT SPECIFIC RESOURCES
What is the Subject Resource Project?
Subject Resource is a collaborative project carried out by the LRC Team with support from Curriculum Managers centralise resources and ensure students have access to the right materials. We worked very closely with Curriculum Managers to keep our stock and information up-to-date.
Subject Specific Stock Arrangements in the Library
This involved restructuring the Library by moving away from the Dewey system and curating subject bays with resources ordered under curriculum topic headings. These topic headings were curated by Curriculum Managers to fit their curriculum and stock.
We have seen a significant rise in usage figures under this new structure where all resources are kept together, including recommended textbooks, Non-Fiction and DVDs.
This also involved departments going through our stock and selecting resources that they wanted to keep, and resources that were no longer relevant. This means we have more space to invest in more relevant materials for subjects.
All Subject Specific bays begin with a bay block with the subject, then a subject poster explaining the full titles of all the classification codes used. Textbooks are always stored at the beginning of the top shelf. Shelf talkers identify where categories begin, and continue if they run onto another shelf. Each shelf (except the first) has a front facing resource at the end of the shelf.
See below an example of the French Subject Specific Bay.
Subject Specific Dashboards on Accessit
Following on from the completion of the Subject Resource Project in the Library, we have now moved on to enhancing our subject stock organisation on Accessit, with the introduction of Subject Specific Dashboards. These dashboards are being built for every subject in the College, and give easy access to key reading lists for students curated by Curriculum Managers. They also provide online resources reading lists and any physical subscription resource reading lists, bespoke to that particular subject.
If you would like to discuss Subject Specific Dashboards in more detail please email the LRC Team at lrc@farnborough.ac.uk
What impact does collaboration have on students?
We have seen a huge rise in borrowing figures. Student feedback is that this structure makes finding resources much easier.
