Course Preparation Work
Task 1 - Current Events
It is an important time to be studying global and national politics. To help you gain an understanding of current events please create a document which describes the five most important UK political stories of the summer.
For each story explain what has happened, and why. Explain the implications of the story and why it is controversial. You might want to compare various viewpoints on the story and use a range of sources.
Place those stories in order of importance.
At the end write an explanation of why the stories are important and why you have ordered them in the way that you have. Try and include other events apart from those surrounding the General Election.
Task 2 - What is Politics?
Complete this worksheet that goes over some of the basics of British politics using these scanned pages.
Task 3 - The 2024 General Election
There is a big debate in politics over the idea that political parties (like the Conservatives, Labour, Greens, Liberal Democrats, Reform UK, etc.) win an election (their ideas are favourable over other political parties to voters) or that parties lose elections (voters reject their ideas and look for a suitable replacement party).
Based on what you have read about the 2024 Election on 4 July, why was this the election result? Was it because a party 'won' with their ideas or did another party 'lose' because voters rejected their ideas? Use two pieces of evidence to support your argument. These can be from news articles, TV programmes, blogs, etc.
