It is more than likely that you may not have studied music technology at level 2 prior to coming to the College. Some of you may not be familiar with basic technical terminology. For a brief introduction to the subject, please watch the short video on the left which explains what music technology looks like in the modern world.
Over the course of your two years studying music technology, you will be required to analyse popular music production from the early 1900’s onwards.
In preparation for this, we would like you to identify two tracks of your choice that have had a significant influence on you. The two tracks must be contrasting styles (for example, rock and reggae, modern dance music, acoustic folk etc.). We would like them to be one older song (pre 1980s) and one modern one (2000s onwards). Be prepared to discuss your chosen tracks and findings with your music technology class in your first lessons at College.
Your research should include the following:
Musical characteristics of each recording (What instruments do you hear? How is the track structured? What textural contrasts can you hear?)
Production characteristics of each recording - what effects (such as reverb or echo etc.) can you hear?
Stereo - where are the instruments placed within the mix of the song (panning) - left / right / centre etc?
Compare the two different recordings and identify potential similarities and / or differences between each one
Offer an opinion as to why these recordings differ
What is it about these tracks that you like?
