What is 'reading around the subject' and how do you 'read around the subject'?
Reading around the subject is when you’re expected to find additional material to support your learning. This is what being an independent learner is all about and something you will be expected to do a lot of at University and so we begin to introduce this at A level in preparation. As well, if you are hoping to achieve an A/A* in A level biology then reading around the subject will really help to improve your chances of this.
Reading around the subject is important to your overall success because it:
Helps you to make sense of the topics that you are studying in class
Keeps you up to date with current biological research
Informs, inspires and challenges you to find out more
Of course though, finding additional material doesn't just have to be through reading. There are so many great ways to discover more and deepen your understanding. Provided below are some ideas of things you could do over the summer in preparation for starting A level biology in September....
