Evaluate Cost Object for a 100 person wedding (50 rooms occupied), guests are staying in the Marriott hotel for 1 week (in Lancaster, PA), and they enjoy the restaurant and the services the hotel has to offer.
Check in/Check out - Important to make sure wedding guests are comfortable with their experience. Involved staff are people working the concierge desk.
Room Cleaning - Key part of hotels success for reputation of the hotel as nobody wants to stay in a dirty room. Involved staff are the room cleaning crew.
1 Meal @ Restaurant - Important to bring profit in from wedding guests on their nights off to enjoy food for themselves. Involved staff are the people working at the restaurant including kitchen staff (chef, sous chef, line cooks), hosts, servers, and bussers.
Linen/Laundry - Key for cleanliness of the hotel. Involved staff are the cleaning crew.
Security - Important for guests to feel safe. Involved staff are security staff paid by the hour and a chief security officer.
Guest Spending a Night in Hotel with Entertainment - Important so when guests have downtime they can watch tv or do work through the hotel wifi. Involved staff are front desk people who help to ensure guests have a great experience and IT staff that will fix any internet or TV issues.
Book Reservations - Key task however there could be an online check in, so less time and money go into this task when the guest arrives at the hotel. The involved staff is the front desk workers and IT can help create a faster and more efficient reservation system.
Setting up Guest Loyalty - Key for a good return rate from hotel guests. Involved staff are the front desk and the guest loyalty program team employees.
Shuttle Ride - Expensive service and could get rid of this to save money for hotel and could recommend people walk or take Uber's since they are relatively cheap in Lancaster. Involved staff are drivers hired by the hotel and front desk who coordinates the rides.
1 Massage - Massages at hotels make the hotel more luxurious but since it is a great cost it isn't necessary (could cut down labor costs). Involved staff are the people working at the wellness concierge and the actual massage therapist.
Staff and Development - Important throughout the year and especially important during a high stakes event like a wedding. Involved staff are employees that are getting trained and the head manager for employee training.
SMART Goals
A rank-and-file employee - After the wedding week is over in May, 2025, the bartender for the wedding will get an average of 5 five star reviews.
Supervisor - Due to the Marriott Staff doing a great job for the wedding, 1 wedding guest will discuss with the supervisor and recommend they manage a wedding for a friend/family member by May, 2026.
A department head, food manager - By May 2025, the food manager head for the wedding will host five more food related events due to good reviews by May, 2026.
A department - cleaning up crew - After learning new skills from the wedding, the cleaning crew department will use 10% less costs of cleaning equipment by all events starting in May, 2026.
A high level executive - The wedding will move so smooth and due to the great reputation, the high level executive will get 5% less security related calls during events by May, 2026.
The smart goals are informed by the cost assignment calculation because they all have to do with running the business more efficiently, cutting costs, or getting recommended for other weddings/events which will bring in revenue for Marriott Hotel. By meeting these goals, overall costs going into planning a wedding will decrease.
Performance measure goals will be through customer surveys, turnaround rates for more weddings/events, and customer reviews on the website (for example looking to see if a guest will recommend Marriott hosts a wedding in the future for a friend or a family member).
In order to incentive employees to reach these goals, the organization will have employee benefits. If the supervisor hits the target goal, they will get an extra paid day of vacation. If the department head reaches this goal, they will have a free pizza party thrown for their staff. If the department reaches its goal, each member will get a $100 dollar bonus on their next paycheck. If a high level executive reaches this goal, they will get a $200 dollar bonus on their paycheck and free plane tickets for their next families vacation.
