Generative AI refers to a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) that can generate new content, such as text, images, music, and video, based on patterns learned from large datasets.
These tools are already changing how we interface with computers. They have the potential to reshape how we access, understand, and produce knowledge and information.
F&M staff, faculty, and students are exploring how AI and ML can enhance and support the College's liberal arts mission. While F&M scholars are open to using AI in their classes and research, they are also examining its potential for harm and finding ways to ensure the breakthrough technology promotes the common good.
AI is spurring new creations, collaborations, and discoveries across the College. This site will serve as a campus hub for all F&M ITS AI-related news, events, and guidelines.
Franklin & Marshall College community members are personally responsible for all work they produce, regardless of the tools or methods used in its creation. When using generative AI tools:
➡️ You are accountable for accuracy: AI systems frequently produce plausible-sounding but incorrect information. You must verify all facts, claims, and citations before relying on or sharing AI-generated content.
➡️ You are responsible for quality: AI output is a starting point, not a finished product. You must review, refine, and ensure that all content meets the standards expected in your role or coursework.
➡️ You are bound by College policies: Using AI does not exempt you from F&M's Academic Honesty Policy, individual faculty requirements in coursework, data classification policies, other College policies, copyright requirements, or generally accepted professional conduct standards.
➡️ You must exercise judgment: AI tools cannot replace critical thinking, ethical reasoning, or professional judgment. You remain responsible for decisions made based on AI-generated information or recommendations.
