This image is of Old Main (center), Goethian Hall (left), and Diagnothian Hall (right). This photo was retrieved from the Franklin and Marshall College library’s Archives and Special Collections. The photo was taken circa 1856, around the year that Diagnothian and Goethian Halls were completed, but a few years after Old Main was built in 1853 (F&M Ghost Stories).
This photo is relevant because it is believed to be the location of Gallows Hill before the construction of the Old Main building. Franklin and Marshall College’s Archives and Special Collections speculate that the “story of ‘Gallows Hill’ may be true” (F&M Ghost Stories). It was common practice for executions to take place at “the highest remote point outside the town” (F&M Ghost Stories). With further research, I found that the hill in Buchanan Park and the present-day location of Old Main are the highest points in the city of Lancaster with elevations of roughly 438 feet (Brubaker, 2015).
