Failing to Turn in Work

The student may:

• Have low academic ability

• Have completed work in their folders, locker, or backpack

• Have a very messy locker, desk, or backpack

• Be inattentive and easily distracted/off task

• Have an unstable home and little parental follow through

• Dislike school and be irresponsible

• Not know the directions or the content

• Be disorganized

• Act out, clown around, or other inappropriate behaviors

• Procrastinate and put things off

• Have a hard time getting started

• Have no sense of urgency

• Create disturbances like noises or conflicts

What can I do?

• Second Step lessons

• Create classroom norms and expectations

• Assign a buddy or partner

• Call parent or note home

• Color coded folders

• Daily planner

• Do unfinished work during recess or unstructured time

• Frequent home contact

• Individual work space

• Logical consequence

• More structured routine

• Natural consequences

• Organize materials daily

• Provide a container for the student’s belongings

• Rewards, Simple Reward Systems, & Incentives

• Take away privileges

• Take away unstructured or free time

• Talk one on one with student- OARS Technique

• Develop, "Get me out of Trouble Plan"

• Talk to parent

• Visual schedule

Development of intervention support for 'failing to turn in work' may be referred to the school social worker. Parent should be contacted prior to a referral.
