Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)/Toxic Stress/Trauma

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are the largest public health crisis to be identified in the past thirty years. Traumatic childhood experiences (toxic stress/trauma) impact a child’s daily life in the home, in school and the community as they grow. These adversities (injuries) in childhood also impact adult health and wellbeing, often identified as PTSD. Even when children are too young to remember the events (neglect, physical/emotional/sexual abuse, abandonment, violence, etc.), the body never “forgets.” Childhood adversity affects a child’s ability to learn and behave in productive ways by changing brain chemistry and architecture thus impacting their ability to learn and behave “normally” in schools and other settings.

SAVE THE DATE...

Please join the McKinley PTA on Thursday, June 9, 7pm in the McKinley cafeteria for a conversation about the racial imbalance issue at McKinley School. Fairfield Public Schools (FPS) Superintendent Mike Cummings and Board of Education (BoE) Chair Christine Vitale, as well as additional BoE members, plan to present the latest information they have and how we can move forward. The state has asked FPS and the BoE to present an updated plan in 3 months. Read the article about that State Board of Education meeting at https://www.ctinsider.com/news/article/State-presses-Fairfield-to-address-racial-17155452.php.

To provide a contextual background for families who may be new to Fairfield, or Connecticut, school systems are expected to maintain a minority balance at all schools which closely mirrors the minority balance of the school district as a whole. The threshold for compliance to this law written in 1969 is defined in State Board of Education Regulations as not exceeding 25 percentage points more or less than the comparable proportion for the school district. The state labels schools as racially imbalanced when the proportion of minority students for any school exceeds 25 percentage points more than the comparable proportion for the school district. For details about Fairfield’s involvement to date, please visit https://boe.fairfieldschools.org/racial-imbalance-plan/.

We will be conducting our 4th and last lockdown drill this school year this week.

Congratulations to Miss Bettke and FCCC McKinley Students and Alumni

Postponed for 2 years due to the pandemic, the Fairfield County Children's Choir (FCCC) performed at Carnegie Hall Saturday night, May 21, in its 25th Anniversary Spring Concert. Leading the Chorale and also serving as an accompanist was our very own Miss Bettke, one of McKinley's music teachers and a McKinley PTA staff member. This was the opportunity of a lifetime and we'd like to thank Miss Bettke (and all of the staff of the FCCC, including Chorus director Miss Ashley Zadravecz, who is a McKinley alum and former student of Miss Bettke - both pictured above) for all of their hard work to make magic happen on that stage Saturday night. Congratulations to the performers, which included many current McKinley students and alumni, as well as two current McKinley staff - Lauren Noonan (STEAM teacher) and Anja Filan (special ed teacher)!

As cases of COVID are rising in our school district, please DO test your children if they are sick.More than once, and especially before sending them back to school. And call the school main office to report the results. If previously vaccinated, or if they had the disease less than 90 days ago, It is now advised to get a PCR test as the viral load might not be strong enough to be detected by a rapid test.

Just a reminder to send in a change of clothing for those wet days or bathroom accidents.

As always, please keep your children home if they are not feeling well in the morning. Do not give Tylenol or Motrin and send them anyway.

Thank you for helping in keeping our school and community safe!

Please submit a copy of your child's vaccination card to the school nurse, Mrs. Kinney.

Dismissal is a very hectic time of the day. Please be sure you send a note to the teacher in the morning when there are dismissal changes. We will NOT accept changes in student dismissal after 12:00. This causes confusion, chaos and compromises the safety of our students.

Free School Meals

  • Breakfast/Snack is a "Grab and Go" to class. Breakfast/Snack cannot be served in the afternoon.

  • Meals to go home are no longer allowed. The only exception would be if you have a student who is required to stay home for an extended period.

  • Adults in the building can no longer take meals home to their children. We are only allowed to serve meals to children who are enrolled in your school.

These changes will take place on Monday, October 4, 2021.
