It’s finally spring! Third graders have been BUSY BEES!

Third graders have been working hard to review the skills they’ve learned in reading. We’ve focused on reading a text closely, digging deeper to find the main idea or theme of a passage, and writing about reading. When writing about reading, students learned to restate the question, answer the question completely and support their answer with 2 pieces of evidence. After April break, students will begin a reading unit titled, “Fairy Tales.” Here, students will learn the elements of a fairy tale and how various parts of a story connect together.

ORDER! ORDER! ORDER! In writing, third graders have been writing opinion essays! They’ve been working hard to develop ideas of changes they would like to see in their world (school, home, community, etc.). Students have been asking and answering, “Why?” with various types of evidence. This unit will be wrapping up after break. After, students will take what they’ve learned while reading fairy tales and begin writing their own adaptations. Always a huge hit!

In math, students have just finished a unit on fractions. This unit focused on having students model fractions in multiple ways (number line, circles, bar models, parts of a set), determine equivalent fractions and compare fractions with like and unlike denominators. Math tests will be sent home after break to be signed and returned.

Third graders are currently in the 3rd social studies unit where we are focusing on learning about the government and how laws are made. Students have learned the different branches and how they work together to do a job.

The stretch from January to April is always a long one, so we hope you and your children are able to get some well-deserved rest and relaxation next week. SBA testing for third graders begins when we return so we’ll need students to be well-rested and ready to show all they’ve learned this year! In order to help keep the students’ skills sharp, we are sending home a SPRING BREAK READING AND MATH CHALLENGE! The students are excited to take on this challenge and we hope you’ll encourage them to complete as much of it as possible. While not required, it is strong encouraged. Thank you for your anticipated support! Have a great break and we’ll see on April 22nd!

SBA STATE Assessment is Upon Us! Grade 3 students will begin their assessment after school vacation. Please visit the CT assessment portal HERE for more information.

Please stress to your child the importance of a good night sleep and a healthy breakfast. Students need to be in attendance everyday and on time for school. Please remind your child to try their very best even when they face some challenging questions. This is an opportunity to showcase what they know and have been learning.
