Tier 2 practices and systems provide targeted support for students who are not successful with Tier 1 supports alone. The focus is on supporting students who are at risk for developing more serious problem behavior before they start. Essentially, the support at this level is more focused than Tier 1 and less intensive than Tier 3.
Tier 2 supports often involve group interventions with ten or more students participating. Specific Tier 2 interventions include practices such as social skills groups, self-management, and academic supports. Targeted interventions like these, implemented by typical school personnel, are likely to demonstrate positive effects for up to 67% of referred students.[1]Tier 2 interventions are:
Continuously available
Accessible within 72 hours of referral
Very low effort by teachers
Aligned with school-wide expectations.
Implemented by all staff/faculty in a school.
Flexible and based on assessment.
Function-based
Allocated adequate resources
Student chooses to participate.
Continuously monitored

What is CICO?
Check-In, Check-Out is our beginning intervention for students needing tier 2 supports. Check- In, Check-Out (CICO) is a research-based teaching tool, which is not intended to include discipline or punishment.
Star Club Chart
Students are typically enrolled in the CICO program/intervention for a minimum of 6 weeks.
A CICO form will be completed daily by your child and his/her teacher. Students will receive their daily Check-In/Check-Out(CICO) sheet from a staff member, called a mentor. This CICO form will be filled out by the teacher throughout the day.
Students will be rated on a 0-2 scale and receive points, based on how well they are following our school expectations.
At the end of the day their points will be recorded by the check-out staff member/mentor and then set home to be reviewed by parents at home.
Ratings=PBIS Points!
Here is how students are rated/scored:
* 2 points are given when a student is following target behaviors at ALL times or is only redirected once.
* 1 point is given when the student is redirected twice.
*0 points are given when the student is redirected 3 or more times.
Students will receive feedback including positive attention and recognition for demonstrating appropriate behavior as a part of this program.
Difficult days will NOT be met with discipline measures based on their rating received on their forms.
Points earned will be applied to earning our school-wide PBIS points which can be used quarterly at our school store and to attend our school’s quarterly events.

WHat Parents Can Do
As a parent, please talk to your child about their day. Review the daily CICO form summary. This is not meant to result in punishment or discipline at home.
This is simply a teaching tool intended to help a child become more aware of their progress on the behavior or academic goals we have at school.
If you think your child would benefit from Tier 2 supports or CICO, please reach out to one of our Tier 2 team members below or fill out the form below.
