Definition of Terms
Several words or expressions will be used throughout the Course of Study. Some of the most important ones are explained below:
Credit
One high school credit is awarded for each course that meets five days a week for a school year. One-half of a high school credit is awarded for each course that meets five days a week for one semester. Exceptions: one-fourth high school credit is awarded for some physical education courses, and courses offering post-secondary education credits may have different credit values assigned.
Required
Courses that a student must take and pass in order to graduate.
Elective
Courses that are not specifically required but may be used toward fulfilling graduation requirements in some cases.
Prerequisite
Coursework, grade-level status, and/or other requirements that must be fulfilled before a student can enroll in a course.
Transcript
A complete record of courses taken, marks earned, total number of credits attempted and earned, GPA, class rank, EOC/SAT/ACT/AP test results, and attendance records for a particular student.
Grade Point Average
Calculation based on final grades, attempted credits and honors points; GPAs are cumulative with the exception of those calculated for quarterly honor roll and eligibility.
Honors Points
Additional points added to the GPA for successful completion of designated honors courses.
Grading Scale
A (90-100%) B (80-89.99%) C (70-79.99%) D (60-69.99%) F (0-59.99%)
Class Status
Class status is determined by the total number of credits the student has earned:
0 – 4.75 credits: 9th grade (Freshman) | 10 – 14.75 credits: 11th grade (Junior)
5 – 9.75 credits: 10th grade (Sophomore) | 15 or more credits: 12th grade (Senior)
