Our program, S.T.O.R.M. R.E.C.E.S.S. (Special Team of Recess Mentors Reach Every Child Ensuring Student Success), operates actively within elementary and middle schools during regular school hours, providing support up to five days a week with a focus on three key components: Connect, Engage, Support.
How It Works:
Connect:
Before launching our program, we collaborate closely with school leaders to identify students who may benefit from additional behavioral support, guided by the PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) framework and SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) competencies. We meticulously create individual profiles for these students, pinpointing their specific behavioral challenges, and develop tailored action plans through our disguised learning program.
Engage:
Our dedicated R.E.C.E.S.S. Coaches initially integrate into the school environment by joining students during recess and lunch periods. They introduce themselves warmly and actively promote kindness and inclusivity across the campus. This proactive engagement helps cultivate a positive school culture and establishes meaningful relationships with all students. As trust and rapport deepen, coaches begin working more closely with students who require additional support. They implement preventive strategies aimed at boosting confidence, enhancing social skills, and mitigating potential behavioral triggers.
Support:
For students who have experienced trauma or face significant challenges, not all behavioral outbursts can be anticipated or prevented. In such situations, our coaches step in as calm and supportive adults to help students regain control. Using evidence-based practices like mindfulness techniques, deep breathing exercises, attentive listening, and engaging physical activities, our coaches provide crucial support to these students during recess and other school activities.
Our program is designed to holistically address the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students, fostering a nurturing environment where every child can thrive. By focusing on connection, engagement, and targeted support, we strive to empower students with the skills and resilience necessary for academic success and overall well-being.
Our dedicated coaches are deeply committed to integrating Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies into recess and lunchtime activities, as well as conducting restorative coaching sessions for students. Through these initiatives, we aim to achieve several important objectives:
Foster SEL Skills: Our primary goal is to create meaningful opportunities for students to develop essential social and emotional competencies during their free time. By engaging in structured and supportive activities, students can enhance their abilities to form healthy relationships, effectively manage their emotions, and make responsible decisions.
Promote Positive Interactions: Recess and lunch periods offer ideal settings for students to practice empathy, cooperation, and conflict resolution. By encouraging positive interactions and facilitating meaningful connections, we aim to enhance students' social awareness and relationship-building skills, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and supportive school community.
Support Restorative Coaching: Our coaches play a pivotal role in conducting restorative coaching sessions to address conflicts and guide students in taking ownership of their actions. These sessions emphasize accountability and provide students with valuable opportunities to learn from their experiences, strengthen relationships, and contribute positively to the school community.
By integrating SEL strategies into these informal settings, we are dedicated to cultivating a more inclusive, supportive, and emotionally intelligent school environment. Our overarching goal is to enhance the overall well-being and academic success of our students by nurturing their social and emotional development in meaningful and impactful ways.

The journey towards excellence extends into a comprehensive onboarding experience that blends virtual and in-person training. This immersive training equips R.E.C.E.S.S. Coaches with the essential tools and strategies needed to engage effectively with students and deliver impactful sessions.
Beyond onboarding, our commitment to coach development continues through ongoing support and mentorship. New coaches have the opportunity to learn directly from seasoned mentors, gaining valuable insights and practical experience that enrich their skills and deepen their understanding.
